Keep your back straight and upright, and use your elbows to regulate the intensity of this stretch. Hold the stretch position for a minimum of 20 seconds. Lie on your side and pull your top leg behind your buttocks. Keep your knees together and push your hips forward. This position can put undue pressure on the knee joint and ligaments. Anyone with knee pain or knee injury should avoid this stretch. Hold the stretch position for a minimum of 20 seconds and then repeat with the opposite leg.

Stretching before a run has always been a little iffy in our playbook. It's hard to lengthen muscle fibers before they're warm and trying to do so can lead to injury. But warming up is still a good thing, so try an active warmup like Olympian and marathoner Shalane Flanagan. A dynamic warmup will raise your heart rate a bit while priming your joints for action.
