10 steps to breastfeeding success

Soften the breast by expressing milk. While an electric pump maybe useful, manual expression will probably be adequate. Soothe or stimulate the fretful or sleepy baby by dripping milk on to his mouth. Stroke the baby's upper lip with the nipple waiting for him to lift his head and drop his jaw, at the same time keep the breast compressed in a shape that easily conforms to his mouth.

The areola should be deeply wrinkled and lax. Once the baby's mouth open wide, swiftly bring him to the breast encouraging him to draw in not just the nipple but also the breast favoring the area below the nipple. Hold on to the compressed breast until the baby starts sucking and is able to hold the nipple far back in his mouth.

Make sure the baby's head is facing the breast with his neck slightly extended. In this position the nipple is directed towards the roof of the mouth. The chin will press into the breast more than the nose. If the baby has difficulty maintaining the flow once he has latched on well, hold him close to the breast while you express small volumes of milk into his mouth. Once he is able to maintain the flow relax your fingers and simply support the weight of the breast with the palm of your hand. If nursing becomes painful stop and remove the baby, break the seal by gently pulling the corner or his mouth then begin again. If nursing is not painful allow the baby to nurse to contentment, then offer the other breast.
