My low beam went out on my headlight and I have to replace the headlights so I thought what I'll now do? I will make a video to show how it's done. Turned out it was pretty easy to do, it uses a standard automotive style Sylvania H4 bulb. I got this at AutoZone, no Pep Boys, I am sure they have them at AutoZone too, 10 bucks. This is what it looks like, a blister pack, and I was on Mr. England's website and that's how I learnt how to this, it turns out it was really easy.
I took off the right inner fairing; it involved removing three screws inside the right pocket. Once you did that, you could pull the pocket out; you've to sort of angle it upwards and out to get it out from this area here. And there were three screws down here; one, two, no I'm sorry two screws, there where two screws here and three screws in the pocket, the whole inner light fairing popped out, then I turned the handlebars to the left as instructed in Mr. England's website and I am able to get down in there, and take off the light, the lamp, the headlight lamp, this is the old one. I don't know if you can see that there is like a little cup section; that's the low beam and there is a filament in that cup; it's called the Shielded cup and that's the low beam, and then under that there is another filament; that's the high beam, which works fine on this bulb but not the low beam. So I have got to replace it.
Once I got the cover off, it was just a matter of pulling off this connector, from the back of the bulb, which is a three prong duo here, and then this rubber boot which is conveniently marked Top, this tab was at the bottom of the boot and it was a pretty easy thing to reach in there, and take out the lamp. I don't know if I can get this very well but after I removed, after I got the rubber cover off, there it is, can't reach into, hold on, you are not going to like doing this if you have got big hands, fortunately I have got little hands, no sharps, slab of plastic right there, the hell out of your hand, but inside there, if you can see that there is just a wire springing retainer on a hinge, swings like a swinging door, and retains the lamp in there, so I pulled up on that, it popped out, the hinged door swinging around, and I was able to pull the headlight out, which has these three tabs, top tab goes up, two bottom tabs go down, and they match up with three slots in the headlight assembly.
So, now I got to see if I can get this new lamp, in that they say do not touch, do not touch to the bulb with your fingers, it will decrease the life of the halogen lamp. Let me turn off the video now and practice with the old lamp, before I try to install the new lamp. So I want to make sure I know how to do it. I'll be back. Okay, I'm back, I've chopped off and you're going to be able to see it.
There is a nice little sharp pointing piece of plastic, that I chopped the corner of because it was killing my hand, I don't know if you can see that either but there are marks on my wrist from when I was feeling around in there, and hitting that sharp corner, I don't want to upset this bulb here because this is the new one. I am not supposed to touch the glass, but it looks like from practice with the old ones, it was pretty easy to do. I can squeeze my left hand in between the forks and my right hand around here, and with both hands I can easily align my tabs on this with the slots on the head lamp, and I'll swing that wire clip retainer around up and down into its little latch, and lock it into place, pretty easy to do, and which I'm going to do right now and then come back again.
The first hands in there, I was easily able to pop it in there without touching of the glass, align the three tabs with their slots, and it stayed in place without the latch being fully latched. There will be enough way to sliding out easily and falling on the ground. Even as I just swung that latch around, up and down, you have to see it while I was doing which, sort of, popped into place, take a little bit of finagling to get the hang of it but, pretty easy to do.
Now it's in there, I just need to put on the rubber boots, and the connector which I'll do next. Okay, one thing that scared me, when I turned on the ignition; it didn't, the headlight didn't come-on. So you've to turn on the ignition, well the headlight wont come on until the motorcycle was started, so it started. Now it comes on, new lamp light, high beam, low beam, high beam, low beam. But as I turn the ignition off, the light goes off, so you can't test the headlights unless the engine is running.
Okay I had some difficulty figuring out how this rubber boot goes on, how it seal, it didn't feel like there was anything in there that it could -- but here itself too, scratch around and over, what you do is; this is the outside of the boot, you align the three prongs on the light with these holes on the boot, and then push this down so that it touches the lamp, the inside surface of those three holes, you push it down so that they press against the bottom of the lamp, and then you feel around and you press this ring here, this convolution here, if you finagle that, you'll feel how it presses around something in there, and clamps down around it and snaps into place. So first, push this down to the lamp and then make this ring clamp around whatever it is, in there it clamps on it and I can't see it really well, my eyes are not very good, and I just can't see it but it does, it clamps around.
