Hello everyone, welcome to Cajuna’sFoodandWine.com, the galaxy’s most popular food and wine program. I am your host Patrick and assuming we don’t run out of video on this. We are tasting the 2005 Rodney Stronf Sonoma County Merlot. This bottle is brought over for dinner last night. Over the years, I've been a fan of Rodney Stronf. I always thought they made solid wines. I usually enjoy them very much.
This one I had some last night and I just had a little bit that was left. I had a little bit saved up here to try again just to see if it's different than last night. I'll tell you what I thought about it last night when I tried it. You get some dark cherry. I get oak, vanilla, oak on the nose pretty prominent. Taste, it's a little I want to say better but that’s not fair because my wife like it and mother-in-law like it. They happen to like heavy oak treatment in wine which is fine. That’s what you like. That’s great.
For me, this is too oaky. It's a nice made wine. There’s nothing awful thing about it. I'm not getting heat from it but the fruits in this are being dominated by the oak. To me that’s a very obvious domination. Not like the videos you watch with the you know and the longer and little domination.
This to me is overly oaked, the apples in check, 13.8. Either way, the alcohol doesn’t come through. It's not my cup of tea. I wouldn’t be buying this again for me. Well I guess my wife and mother-in-law, they like it. They like a good amount of oak treatment. They like some wood in their mouth. What can you say?
So for them, they like it. For me, it's too much on the okay side. I'm not getting any of the characteristics for the Merlot grape at all. The fruit is a little mutted. Today, the fruit is a little bit more upfront which is nice but it's still being overpowered by the oak. That's it. For me, this is probably an 85, 86-point wine. Let’s say 85 and at the price I'm pretty sure this is probably a $15.00 to $17.00 range or maybe the $20.00 something. For me, I'm not buying this again. But again, if you like that heavy oak treatment, it's a well-made wine.
So, you can give it a try. But for me, not my cup of tea.
