Gary: Laid back Friday. Hello everybody and welcome Wine Library TV. I am your host, Gary Vaynerchuk. And this my friends, it’s the thunder show, aka, the internet's most passionate wine program. And we have not been on the couch. Matt, in a long, long time.
I'm excited. And what we haven't done in a long time is open up pack of cards. Remember when we do that every day? I don’t want to hear from big Kahuna.
These are from the classic four sport packs. Old school. Dying to see what's going on. I don’t know, you have to bear with me if you want me to get to the wine.
Chad Penny. Jeff Nelson. Michael Stewart. These are all the guys that did not make it to the league of hockey. Mike Dunom. Charon Wright. Billy Mckafry. Bryan Grant. The guy who is on the Heat pre dreads. He's actually dealing with a tough disease right now, big shout out to Bryan Grant. Wish you well. Antonio Lengam. Andre Buchen. David Cooper. Lot of hockey in this pack. Mark Desantes. Daniel Marshal. Remember that guy? He was supposed to be legit. Bryan Buchanan. Jason Gildon. Perry Klein. And Doug Newsmer.
That was a crap ass pack. I’ll clean that up. Let's hope the wines aren't. And I doubt they will be, because we are looking at 2007 Gigondas.
You know, Gigondas is a category that brings the thunder, and 2007 in the Rhone valley is a vintage that has every body’s panties in a bunch. People are really going after these wines. They're very hot.
Lot of hockey cards in there, matt?
Matt: Yeah.
Gary: Mainly hockey.
People really excited about the ’07 Rhones but Chateauneuf-du-Pape are 30 to 60, 70, 80 bucks a bottle. Gigondas offers an amazing alternative. For example, this first one, Matt. The Arnoux, 2007 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes. This 89-91 points Robert Parker. 75% Grenache, 30% syrah, and comes in at $14.99 a bottle. So we're looking at some really interesting opportunities at the price points. Let's give this a little bit of sniffy sniff.
Now, you’re going to notice, both these wines, 70% and 16% Grenache base. Heavy on the Grenache. Let's give it a little sniff.
Lot of petal action. Get a lot of floral components going on here. Little bit of pepper as well, but not that much. A little bit of raspberry cherry. Little gamey. Little gamey. I feel like I kind of shot like a turkey, can we shoot turkeys? And stuck my hand on the guts and smell it, little gaminess. Little deer, veniscent.
Pepper. Let's give it a whirl.
Great firm tannins coming through. Little hollow on the mid palate. It’s kind of like oily, again, kind of like a motor oil kind of play on this wine. Not bad. Nice mid palate. Excuse me, nice open attack. Little short on the mid palate. And then a decent finish. Kind of a roller coaster wine, this is. Feel like I was Yoda. Roller coaster, is it.
Great wine for $14.39. There’s a lot of garbage in the market. Doesn’t taste real like this does at $14.39. Being not a 91 point wine like Parker thought, but definitely 89 point wine. That’s where I'm going to go with. 89 points. Right on the cost by being spectacular at the price point. And if you want to find out what Gigondas is all about, and especially with the ’07 Rhone is about, it’s a good price point to start at that.
You have that great white violet floral play. Just lacking the umph to get into that 90 point range. That upper tier of wines. But a really good way to start Friday. A wine that you should probably go out and find. Text yourself up right now, write it down, smoke signals, if you want to go old school. Well worth your $15, I think it can expand a lot of palates.
Be honest, little side question of the day, no bull crapping. Have you ever had a Gigondas? You're going to say no, try to write this down. Monsieur Gaton is the importer, which means he's going to have good distribution around the country. I think you might be able to find this wine. And the price is very attractive. Let's move on.
Gigondas, Domaine des Bosquets, 2007 Gigondas. One of the great producers. 60% Grenache, 20% syrah, 10 Mourvedre, 10 Cinsaut. 92 points Wines Spectator. I love the cinsaut grape. Adds a lot to this, 23 bones, 92 points Wine Spectator. Vastly excited about trying this wine. This is one of the premier producers of all Gigondas. And as you could see, I don’t know if you could tell from before. This is a much darker. The color is much darker, much deeper. And the nose is much more interesting.
God, I love this Grenache-syrah kind of gaminess. Again, the gaminess comes through. There's a little bit of like tar on this wine that I really like. If you don’t love tar, tar bubbles, asphalty kind of flavors. You might be turned off by the nose. Little orange peel, believe it or not. Which starts happening a little bit on some of these wines that I pick up. I get a little bit of orange peel, which I like though. Little oily. Almost like has Italian nose. In some ways, little oily. Let's give it a whirl.
Dark chocolate, strawberry pie. I want to really send that message home. Rose petals. Very chewy. It’s almost like beef jerky kind of like. You know how you ate the Sneakers bar or drink a V8 if you're hungry? Those are two things, Matt. When you're hungry, do you ever think of Sneakers bar or V8 juice? Does that come to mind at all? Does it register anywhere?
Matt: Not for me.
Gary: I don’t know, I travel so much that I order. Like when I'm flying, I order tomato juice if I'm hungry. There's just like more to it, if that makes any sense. It quenches, not only a beverage thirst, but a hunger. And that’s what this wine does for me. I literally, I'm a little hungry right now. And I feel like I ate something. There’s some serano ham. Charteutury kind of components to this wine. That’s because it’s viscous and thick and big and powerful. This is a gorgeous wine.
Forget the last wine, I'm over here now. Forget the last wine, spend the extra 8 bones, find this wine. 23 bones, 92 points Spectator, 93 points for me. I think they missed it by a point. This is a spectacular. It rivals enormous amount of $35 to $50 Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It’s spectacular. Wow. What a way to go back on Friday to the laid back couch. Oh I wish they could see this. I actually just pin pointed the wristband in between the mic and the camera.
What a nice way to get back on the laid back Friday couch. I could tell right now that this is one of the better $23 Rhone wines I've had in a long time. And I think you’ll find it extremely exciting. It’s very powerful, the last 5-7 years. Will go great with steaks and big meats. And anything you want to pair it up with right now, phenomenal effort. Bosquets, once again a leader in Gigondas, price value too. Spectacular $23 bottle of wine. And one of the more exciting shows I've done in a while. Because, ’07 rhones are exciting to me, Gigondas is an underrated area that I want more people to start paying attention to. And they both brought the thunder.
Question of the day, what is your prediction for this year’s Final Four? Who is going to be in the Final Four in college basketball? You can give me one team, four is a daunting task. But I want you to start thinking about it. The tournament’s coming. What is your Final Four? I want to analyze it, I need the data to make my picks.
You, with a little bit of me, and don’t forget that side question, have you had Gigondas? We’re changing the wine world.
