After a week of comprehensive testing including a full range of performance tests plus a 25 mile road loop and off-road loop, the MotorTrend judges have chosen the Subaru Forester as the 2009 MotorTrend sport utility of the year.
The Subaru Forester won the because it was the vehicle that best fit the three criteria, superiority, significance and value. Subaru's trademark flat-four cylinder engine, gives the Forester a low center of gravity, which means good stable handling on and off the road.
The symmetrical all-wheel drive system gives you all the attraction you need, even in marginal conditions. With this latest generation of Forester, Subaru has made it look more like an SUV and less like a station wagon. And that seems to be paying dividends in the marketplace.
Sales are increasing as customers are attracted by the SUV style and good gas mileage. The Subaru Forester averages between 20 and 26 miles/gallon on the EPA cycle. And the sport utility market that has everything from high-riding hot-rods to family-oriented crossovers, the Forester seems to offer the right balance of attributes for these times.
It's a great package inside too with plenty of room for five people and all their gear. The Subaru DNA is clearly evident in the Forester. There is not a lot of flash or bling with his vehicle, but it continues to impress and it's terrific value, $31,000 buys you a Subaru Forester fully loaded. Add it all up and you can see why the Subaru Forester is MotorTrend's 2009 sport-utility of the year.
