2009 Porsche Boxster Review
Porches are like Ferraris, Vets, or even Mustangs. They're more iconic franchises than car lines.
So you screw with them lightly. And the minute a consumer sees one on the road, and says,
"What is that?" the manufacturer just committed suicide. So with that, I give you the new
Boxster and Cayman. Notice, subtle revisions.
On the Boxster, a much angrier face, thanks to big, new air intakes and new light assemblies
around them. Basic power is 255 horse from a 2.9-liter, and 310 horsepower from a 3.4. And it's
available with Porsche's much-improved high-end head unit with a touch screen and better
interface design. And for the first time, the Boxster can be had with the Porsche double glingen
shclogin. I can't pronounce it. It's just their PDK, a hot new dual-clutch, automated 7-speed
manual.
The Cayman gets 265 horsepower out of its basic 2.9 motor and 320 horsepower out of the S.
Both are 10 horsepower higher than the Boxster, largely for market segmentation than any other
reason. And of course, the PDK and the revised PCM electronics are available here, too. You
seldom Porsche mention fuel economy, but this is late 2008 and they're mentioning it. The 2.9
cars do about 26 miles per gallon. And the 3.4 cars, just a little worse, at around 25, driven
sedately, of course.
