Martin Williams: It is great news for gadget lovers, automakers that are embracing IT and many of the concept and production cars on show at this year's Tokyo Motor Show features advanced systems to communicate with the driver and entertain passengers.
Take a look at the dashboard of Nissan's Land Glider. The concept bar features from all electric Leaf Car that is due next year and features a wrapped around LCD panel with a second center panel for the navigation display. The Land Glider is a single person all electric vehicle that leans into corner like a motorcycle when it turns.
Equally shiny was the dashboard of Mitsubishi's concept PX MIEV. The car plugged in a hybrid surrounds the driver with information on LCD's and there is a fourth display in the center with an interface for the entertainment system. But for LCD's size nothing beats diehard Daihatsu's Deca, Deca small van. It is intended to appeal to people with outdoor hobbies so they can carry something like a bicycle. For photographer's special feature a 35 inch LCD monitor to check pictures and a desk to work on.
Fiero, a company that builds one of concept cars for auto makers was showing a design of its own that combines cutting edge tech and design. The LCD dashboard is complemented by a ray touch panel that interfaces into the entertainment system and telephone. Wilcom a local mobile operator built its core XGP data service into the car, that's supports 20 megabyte per second networking to and from the vehicle. Toshiba provided LED lights.
