This is Audi's new S5 Cabriolet. It replaces the S4 Cabriolet in Audi's lineup for 2010. The name isn't the only thing different here. Audi ditched the pretty fabulous 4.2 liter V-8 from the S4 Cabriolet in favor of a supercharged 3 liter V-6. The purpose of this downsizing? Saving fuel while preserving performance.
I just drove this car and it is about as quick as the old S4 Cabriolet and it definitely does use less fuel. The downside? The engine doesn't sound quite as good as the old V-8 and the power delivery isn't quite as thrilling. That's it.
It's really hard to argue with how this car looks. It is gorgeous. The character line that runs down the side is shared with the S5 coupe and the front is far more aggressive than the old car and especially when you see it with the LED running lights on.
It's also got a great interior, a fabulous Bang & Olufsen stereo and a really nice ride, especially when quipped with the newly available Audi drive select adaptive damping. The S5 Cabriolet will be available only with Audi's 7-speed S-Tronic transmission. It's a dual clutch transmission that basically functions like an automatic.
When this car goes on sale later this year, we anticipate that it will cost about $60,000. A small price to pay for that much style.
