We're here with the 2009 Ford Mustang GT, the icon of the modern muscle car era. Things are about to get very interesting for ford however, the Dodge Challenger is already on the market and next year comes the Chevrolet Camaro. Ford does have an answer though and it's called the 2010 Mustang GT.
Before we go and drive the 2010 Mustang, let's take a brief look at what's changed between the old one and the new one. Now what strikes you first off is that the cars haven't changed all that much. And that's because the Mustang GT has been a very big seller for Ford. They wanted to keep the new one less of a revolutionary change and more of an evolutionary change. So they've retained a lot of the same basic hard-points. Things like the windshield touchdown points, the roof line, the wheel base and the track width, these things are not changed.
What has changed, are basically every single body panel of the car. And as you can see it's a lot sleeker and it's a lot smoother. Up front, there is a totally revised front fascia and grill. There are headlights that use integrated trend signals just like in a 1970's era mustang. And this power domed hood.
As you move along the side, you could see there are several striking, historic mustang cues built into this vehicle. There is that hockey stick that comes off from the rocker panel and then goes to the rear quarter panel and there is that bulging rear-fender line. This is supposed the car look like its squatty and ready to pounce. Moving on to the back again, an all new rear-fascia including the sequentially lit vertical taillights, another cue from Mustangs of the past.
As with the exterior of the new Mustang, the interior looks very similar to the old one until you get a closer look. First thing you notice is the instrument panel which now curved in a very soft TPO material, that's single piece. So it doesn't have that many creeks and noises as a multi-piece hard plastic version of the 09 Mustang. Other things you notice include a rectangular Air conditioning vents. The old one had circular vents all the way across. This one has circular ones to the side and rectangular ones in the center.
The P-brake handle also seems to be changed. As though it moves back, made a little bit smaller and the switch gear seems to be vastly improved. The buttons are nicer to push, the knobs easier to turn, in general feels much higher quality. Moving on to the driver seat when you look down, its no longer dark tunnels you're looking at. Its speedometer and tachometer are now white faced gauges, still have the retro fonts. But it's generally much improved for visibility and the steering wheel now has controls for cruise control and audio.
The one thing that doesn't translate to video though, is how well everything feels underhand. There is been a lot of improvement here in terms of the surfaces, the textures and general materials, everything feels a lot better in this new Mustang.
So those are the biggest differences both inside and out between the 2010 Mustang GT and the 2009 version. But Ford says the biggest improvements are in the way this vehicle drives, so let's go see how she runs.
