Hi! I'm Angus Mackenzie Editor-In-Chief of Motor Trend and I'm here on the Toyota stand at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show with one of the most anticipated debuts of the show. The all new 2010 Toyota Prius.
The Prius is the third generation of the hybrid vehicle that Toyota has now produced and the most advanced by far. Toyota now claims the Prius will hit 50 miles per gallon on the highway. It has a combine powertrain output of 134 horsepower.
Toyota says the Prius will hit 0 to 60 in 9.8 seconds. That's considerably faster than the 10.5 seconds or so of the existing cars. So it's faster, more fuel-efficient and better away from the lights.
There is going to be a lot more technology available in the 2010 Prius 2. Toyota will offer a solar powered sun roof that will ventilate the car if it's parked in the hot sun. You'll also be able to get Toyota's Park Assist which debuted on the Lexus LS 460 last year.
Long term, Toyota expects to sell 180,000 Prius in the United States and many of them will be existing Prius owners. Toyota says, 90% of existing Prius owners say there next car will be a Prius. On that basis, Toyota already has a hit on its hands.
