2011 Ford Mustang 5.0 Review
It seems like Ford can equip the Mustangs in the Auto Show circling on their side a lot
lately probably because the car itself doesn’t change much but they’ve been talking about
engines. Now at the LA show, it showed you an all new V6 that has one horsepower
more than the Camaro’s direct injection V6.
Here’s another engine story. Now Ford of Detroit is rolling out at a new 5 liter.
Remember the V8 up until now, for the last handful of years has been a 4.6. It was more
high tech engine than the old 302 base to V8, where that five leader thing is kind of
important especially when you want to get more power up out of an engine, little more
capacity never hurts, that’s where the 5 liter number is back now.
This V8 is going to give 412 horsepower, a big bump over the last GT-V8, as well our 90
foot pounds of torque. You’ve got a good mile of joules at 1725 with their projecting.
How they’ve got there is the variety of technology. These are aluminum heads and
aluminum block with iron cylinder liners. I think they’ve work out the spacing on the
heads as wide enough to have this vertical intakes right across the top here for good
breathing efficiency. And as they’re doing on the new V6 lots of anti friction
technologies, get more out of the engines.
There’s no dramatic thing going on here. No supercharger, no turbo, not even direct
injection in this case, but they do have a pretty advance independent variable cam timing
systems to let all the cams work basically on their own, intake and exhaust and be
independent beyond that.
There is also electric power assist on the steering siege, get rid of a parasitic loss from a
hydraulic pump, that’s built it up to the front of the engine, and overall because of a light
weight materials and other engineering, they’ve got 20% less weight on this overall 5
liter power plant than the old 302 based one that was around for decades. So all of that
combines for a car that gets battery with its own weight better and uses less gas while
doing it.
