Male1: Hey there, I am Steve Nelson and you are watching Four Minute Film School. Last week we learned about film war and all the different parts that add up to its style. The lighting, the characters, the plots, the shots, the etc and all these there are just small portion about make up, the “Mise-En-Scene” a French term we will be learning about today. So start the clock.

Male1: “Mise-En-Scene” is the use of things other than dialog to help tell the story. Like the old saying goes “One JPEG is worth a hundred blog posts”. That sound it follows me everywhere and we both hear it. That means it is Diagetic but if only you heard it, it would be Non-diagetic which we both know I am going insane or we both know I am not going insane. Do not judge me asshole. Stick around after this break.
Female1: Eric why are you crying?
Male1: Because I do not have enough quick tips.
Female1: Quick tips? How can you get more quick tips?
Male1: I do not know.
Please be in exit. Please let me leave. So real sets can help explain what is going on in here. Characters as mind, like for me, I am going completely insane as I tried to explain “Mise-En-Scene” for minutes. And that shows by this weird clock night mare play sign in.
Cardboard or scrap wood or good for building sets and then he can just paint them. If you want you could also just make some doodles scan them in and green screen your character into the world that you have created. Sure, you may not be real looking but it is kind of cool stylistic point that adds to the “Mise-En-Scene”. And as probably the only thing that has you still here watching that and I hope for really attractive woman to be on screen when we get back to the real world.
Male1: Hello.
Female1: Hi, I am a very attractive woman.
Male1: Now if you want more realistic look and plan on shooting in the real world, you can use props and decorations or a lock there of to add to you’re “Mise-En-Scene”. For instance, we pick this completely bare in hallway to exemplify the empty void and inside of my soul.
Female1: Mr., are you going to use me or what?
Male1: If I had a nickel for every time, I heard that.
Female: Yes, you would be in dead I am sure.
Male1: The closer your characters get, the closer your character gets to the camera. The more intimate the scene becomes.
Female: Mister I am a man.
Male1: Oh! God.
Male1: Editing with a little bit in style using some camera movement and doing some long takes will enhance to “Mise-En-Scene”. Now do not just have your actors wear anything in your movies. Pick a costume that defines who the character is. Like in the movie “The Big Lovowsky” you can always see him running around with sun glasses and a bathrobe on. That defines what his character is, a laid back type of dude. It also does not hard to pick actors, that really are the persona that are playing like in the movie City of God. They got all real Brazilian kids from the hood to play just about every character in that movie but that is neither here nor there wait, this is-, you should know that.
Hey I could just go down the elevator the whole time. Look at that. I will see you chumps later. Before we go, here is the video from Brid Valley Rocks. Yes, watch your favorite moment of “Mise-En-Scene” in the movie and here is what he had to say.
For me, the best things example with “Mise-En-Scene” is Golfer when Michael Colio and he sat in the restaurant about to kill two guys. Just the sound of the train getting closer his eyes pushing to side-to-side the sound of the other guy speaking and just the tension being built to enormous unbearable level before it blows them way it just pure cinema which is a great example of “Mise-En-Scene” up I have seen in the film yet.
Thanks for watching Four-minute Film School. I am Steve Nelson stay tuned for the next week. Where we will cover the Dolly

Male1: At the tone leave a message, we will get back to you.
Male2: If the funniest actor alive wanted to make a non-comedy movie with me. It would Dane Cook and the movie the story of Ann Frank.
Male3: I would say Will Ferrell of the movie I would make would be Broke Back Mountain.
Male4: I would have to say Eddie Murphy, if I would have to make some kind of Mystery and have like a really extreme twisted ending like in the prestige.
