Hello I am Rob Schrab the creator of Scud the disposable assassin. And I am the Co-Creator of channel 101, the Co-Creator of the Sarah Silverman program and monster house. So, I am going to be the guest professor today on Indy Mogul on the four minute film school. and we are going to talk today about drawless animation. Start the clock.
Darwless animation is this, it is taking puppets and models, shooting them on green screen and treating as if they were animation. Try and make this 3D elements and make them look flat. Make it out of cardboard, make it out of garbage throw in front of green screen do not spend any money on it you work fast, fast, fast.
I did a little show called the Ringwald and Molly show where I kind of started developing that. take like a character such as this, this is Molly. And it is just like your simple, I have made this out of garbage, straws, cardboard, rubber bands, toys and fishing line. what I will do is I will shoot him in front of green screen and he will be like talking.
I have 3D pieces, I can take the green screen and put like a drawing behind there. it makes it a lot easier for me to manipulate these characters. I did a music video for the song Crooked Teeth. I also do it a lot on the Sarah Silverman Program where we do color versions of this.
The season she is going to be doing a little dream sequence where she is mermaid talking to some fish and that will be drawless animation too. So you got like this kind of fish character. This is made out of one of those kind of rubber toys, you can get if from some kind of shitty toy store.
This is all T-shirt material I was wearing this shirt. I just took it off and started cutting it. I do not know how to sew it but I hot glued everything in there and then I draw with markers all the lines on it. what are materials that are good for drawless animation?
Well, cardboard is a big plus for me. It is easy to come by all you have to do is look in your garbage and you got probably enough to make an actor. Also I like using a hot glue because it is fast and quick and it is reliable.

Here is a crab claw that I made and I can shoot that on green screen and put that on a separate layer for like a crab I can have it pick up something and put it in its mouth. Cardboard, and one of those kind of robot rubber claws that you probably seen in a Halloween store.
I like taking stuff like that like the mechanics are already made. I just wrap it up with cardboard and hot glue and paint it. take a look at toy laser un, anything with any kind of sound and movement is cool. You are not expecting something that looks like this to actually make a sound or movement.
When you go to discovery store and you see something like this, this is a remote control T-Rex. It is pretty cool, it has got like this rubber skin on it but what if you tore off that skin covered it up with cardboard. So it is all cardboard and bottle caps and toothpick teeth and stuff like that. and you can just take toys that are cheap, that have remote control and just cannibalize them.
You got yourself like a horse that is like running you can speed that up. you could even put yourself on green screen and have them sitting on top of there. the final cut and after effects you can take these toys and make like a whole new world with the miniatures. Do not spend any money. The only money you should ever spend on is your camera and your editing. But props and stuff do not spend any money on it because, you are going to create something really, really special and unique that no one else can with the junk around your house.
So, anyway thank you Indy Mogul for letting me be a guest professor and this has been the four minute film school on Indy Mogul. Take care.
