Speaker: This is Earl from CKS, Colorado Kayak Supply here to talk to you about the five essentials to get you started in Whitewater Kayaking. There are basically five components that you need to get started on any river adventure in Whitewater Kayaking. First and foremost we have our Kayak and Kayaks come in four difference styles, this is a freestyle boat. This is the piece that is going to get me down the water so I am high and dry.
Next, from Whitewater Kayaking you need a paddle, the paddles gives you speed in power and propels you down the river think about the paddle as an extension of your hand but it’s bigger and stronger. Paddles have to get down through any Whitewater environment with ease; paddles come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes to choose from.
The third essential is what we call Whitewater helmet; it’s designed to give your head some protection when underwater. It give you cover in the front and the back of your head and also have a chin strap to keep it from falling off when you go upside down. Helmets are a key essential when you paddling Whitewater in a Kayak.
The fourth essential for Whitewater Kayak is what we call a life vest or a PFT, Personal Floatation Device. PFTs come in all shapes and sizes; you want to pick one out that fits to your body well. Packing PFT is unlike rafting PFT are redesigned for active swimming. If you fall out of a Kayak, you more than likely need to swim yourself shore, so the lower profile allowing someone to ease of doing strong strokes to get to the safety at the side of the river.
The fifth essential for Whitewater Kayak is what we call spray skirt or some people call them spray deck. A spray skirt is made of heavy-duty neoprene that's designed to fit on the cockpit of your Kayak. So, when you are inside of your Kayak, the spray skirt keeps all water and elements from coming in. It’s an essential component from Whitewater Kayaking.
A sixth essential for folks that are paddling in colder environments or dry tops, dry tops are designed to keep the weather and the elements off your torso, with the dry top in the propel thermal layers, you will stay warm and dry all day out on the river.
