5/4 Swing Drum Exercises

The most famous 5/4 swing tune is the song called “Take Five” by the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Joe Morello on drums. Some people don’t know this but this song was actually written by Paul Desmond, the sax player. I would like to demonstrate some of the common rhyme patterns in 5/4 that I have heard and played like to practice. For me, when I’m feeling 5/4 swing, I like to feel the hi-hat pulses on one, two, three, four, five, one, two three, four, five. Although that is not a strict rule, it is the way that I like to play it, it flows and it doesn’t make this odd times interest seem so strange. Let’s get started. Practicing some 5/4 swing patterns.
