Hi! I am Bruce Naylor and welcome to this week’s edition of the Frugal technology show, where every week we are talking about small business technology. What makes you money? Where to use your money? What works? What does not work?
I thought I will start of with the show with a list of the eight signs to tell you it is time to upgrade your server.
So to get started the firs sign is it crawls. It is running is more slowly. Your CPU is around 80% of battery utilization, your disc utilization around 80%, it could be sign that the server is just really being tasked by you know all the jobs it is doing and that is a sign you may want to need to replace that server.
Sign number two, it sucks up allow your time. You are spending too much time maintaining that server. You know keeping it maintenance or just keeping a doggone thing going so it is just really wasting more time than maybe than what is work.
It is noisy. Sign number three. It is noisy. You know fans get noisier as they get older. Hard drives get noisier as they get older and just like a car, the louder these things get, the more likely they are needing to be replaced. So that is a good sign that that server probably it is time to start looking out and upgrade.
Next sign. That is out of warranty and the only guys that can work out non-qualified for social security. But seriously, an older server that is out of warranty could be a very expensive proposition to fix and it could be difficult to find somebody to repair it. So keep that in mind as a sign.
The next sign is that something just does not feel right about that server. Just talking about things like general sluggishness, things are not working right now like they used to, just overall signs that there is problem or issues with that server, so that is something to take in consideration.
Number six. No more head room on the server. What is that mean? It just means that the applications that you are wanting to run on that server now just require more power than what that server can deliver. Maybe the minimum CPU requirements or hard drives specifications speed whatever. There is just no more that you are going to be able to push that server everyday. So that is another sign.
Number seven. Is performance is impaired. You are going to be active some of the other things, really when that server starts degrading and performance is not keeping up. It is not doing the job that you want it to do. You know it is time to consider replacing that server.
And finally, number eight. Server cropped out. Park the farm, took a dirt nap whatever you want to call it. The server is done. Of course that is obvious. It is time to replace the server, but the thing about servers and computers and so forth. It is kind of hard to predict when a hard ware failure is going to happen. So by keeping in mind the age of the computer, the warranty, the performance, the amount of maintenance you are doing on it, servicing and all that, you are upgrading that server before a catastrophe happens is a smart way to save money. Keep your business go on and just keep everything up this now. So those are the eight warning signs. It is time to upgrade and of course number eight being a catastrophic failure.
