Hi! This is Mike Callahan, Dr. File Finder and welcome to part nine of our special butterscotch.com 10 part series on Ubuntu. Now, in this segment, we’re going to look just briefly at Cross Compatibility. Obviously if you're switching from Windows to Ubuntu, there are Windows programs that may be your favorites. And as you can see here, I'm on a Google page where I search for Linux equivalents of Windows programs as page after page of sites that show you programs that you can find under Linux that do the same things as Windows programs.
There are also a number of Windows programs that have Linux versions like Skype, Parallels Desktop, VMware, Thunderbird, Fire Fox and many, many more. Now, there are also emulators like WINE. You have to be clear that Wine does not allow you to run all Windows programs under Ubuntu but it does let you run a large number. Here is the top 10 list of programs that can run under Ubuntu using WINE, some pretty popular games. So, you can check the list. I have it in the show notes of programs that are known to work with WINE. There is also CodeWeavers that have CrossOver for a MAC, for games and for Linux. They also allow you to run a large number of Windows programs under Linux and on the MAC. So, these are ways that you can try to run, some of your Windows programs on your MAC. Ultimately when you decided to switch operating systems for a number of very good reasons, you have to learn to adapt to the software that’s available.
So, this is Cross Compatibility with Windows and Linux and that concludes part nine.
