Hello everyone, this is Chris with watchmojo.com. I am here at La Casa del Habano, a fine cigar emporium here that has a wide variety of really interesting cigars to basically accommodate any palate. It is only about cigars, because really, I do not know all that much and I think there are a few people out there who would like to be initiated, so please.
What most people do not know is that a cigar does have many stages of preparation of selection of leaves to create the final product. For example, there are five different types of leaves just to make one cigar. The binder, the wrapper and the filler are three components of a cigar. The filler has three different types of leaf, one for combustion, one for overall aroma and another for strength. Like fine wines, there are years that yield a better harvest and not so much. As most people know, the best cigars in the world come from Cuba, but most people do not know why and the reason is that that the earth is the main reason. If a specific region in Cuba known as the Vuelta Abajo, it has a bit of what we call a microclimate, it makes it ideal for growing the best tobacco in the world.
How does one typically go about even the act of smoking a cigar?
There are various rituals involved. For beginners, you choose a cigar based on the amount of time you plan on smoking and the strength that is you have the appetite for. You would not have a very mild cigar with a very strong libation such as a Vintage Port, you would like to try marry the strength of the cigar and the libation or after a heavy meal, you can have a stronger richer cigar and then the way you choose to cut the cigar, it can be using the tools God gave you providing you still have them and/or various forms of cutters and scissors that are made for that and then the next process is to at least, try inhaling before lighting to get an idea; the same you would smell a wine before drinking it, well, you should taste the cigar to what your palate have an idea of what is coming.
Once the cigar is properly lit, is important to remember not o inhale. This is not a cigarette.
To me, I suppose, it seems almost kind of two—if I am taking this in, it seems to me as if I should inhale.
Your taste buds are far more queued on your tongue and the front part of your mouth and the last time I checked, there are no taste buds in your throat and a cigar is all about the taste, the flavor and what you are supposed to do is take a small puff and roll it around and see if you could pick up on the subtleties of flavors and aromas that are going to be present and then you exhale gently.
Give me a little bit of a sort of advice on what I might want to try as a sort of a—as a newbie, really, as an uninitiated, what is something that maybe would be something that would be very good for me to adjust my palate with.
The Monte Cristo Number 4, although it is a rich cigar, it is not a very big cigar, so you would only be enjoying it for half an hour to 45 minutes, with the disclaimer not to inhale, you should be doing fine.
Thank you very much!
