The city of Toronto is the largest city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario. The city has a population of 2.48 million in its metro region. The Greater Toronto area has a population of 5.9 million. As Canada's economic hub and a major global city, Toronto has highly developed finance, telecommunications, transportation, media, software production, and medical research industries. The city is home to the CN Tower, and a majority of the country's corporate head offices, and trans-national corporate offices.
Toronto's population is cosmopolitan which reflects its role as a major destination for immigrants to Canada. Toronto has a 46 kilometer long waterfront shoreline. Its borders are bounded by Lake Ontario to the south and the Rouge River to the east. The city experiences four distinct seasons with considerable variance in day to day temperature, particularly during the winter months. Toronto is a major scene for theater and other performing arts.
With more than 50 ballet and dance companies, six opera companies, and two symphony orchestras, the city is home to the National Ballet of Canada, the Canadian Opera Company, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. By night, its people indulge themselves at the city's numerous restaurants, bars, and clubs.
More than anything, Toronto is defined by its citizenry; friendly, efficient, and one of the most multi-cultural in the world.
