A Train Ride to Machu Picchu, Peru

It’s a good way to get a sense for the area’s history by walking the same path used by the Incas so many years ago.

The train offers more creature comforts. It leaves the highlands to enter the mountainous fringes of the Amazon locally called the eyebrow of the jungle. Next stop is Agua Caliente, a small town at the bottom or a mile or so from Machu Picchu. It’s a friendly place with a decent selection of safe eateries. Everywhere in Peru is the sight of the traditionally dressed Campacino usually seen running a fruit and vegetables stand.

There’s plenty of low priced accommodation in town. With the onset of tourism, this town has thrived. Realizing that they are prosperous because of the visitors, the people here embrace you warmly providing safe passage and suitable amenities.

The train drops passengers off with the bus depot nearby. The bus is destined for the archeological site that comes at frequent intervals. We will always remember this bus ride up to Machu Picchu as our most memorable. The bus took us right to the main entrance which is also the site of the government run Hotel de Turistas, the only place to stay at Machu Picchu itself.
