Jennifer Mathews: We look at these pictures and wonder, how can anyone commit such acts? Neuroscientist Richard Davidson says, for some the behavior may be out of their control.
Dr. Richard Davidson: These individuals are not able to engage in the normal modulation of negative emotion when something sets it off.
Jennifer Mathews: Davidson's theory is based on images like these. He compared the brain activity of 500 violent criminals to non-violent people.
Dr. Richard Davidson: In individuals who are prone to impulsive regression and impulsive violence, there is a very pronounced decrease in activation in regions of pre-frontal cortex.
Jennifer Mathews: He says, this knowledge may lead to future solutions.
Dr. Richard Davidson: Now that we know a little bit more about what these brain abnormalities are, more specific Interventions can be targeted.
Jennifer Mathews: This technology developed by Larry Farwell, also measures brain activity but for a different purpose.
Larry Farwell: Brain Fingerprinting is a scientific technology that discovers the truth.
Jennifer Mathews: Words or Images associated with an incidence such as a Crime are shown to the suspect.
Dr. Richard Davidson: If he recognizes it, we get that response, we can tell, Aha! This guy is a perpetrator.
Jennifer Mathews: It works by measuring a murmur in the brain, a response associated with recognition.
Larry Farwell: It doesn't matter, if the person is lying, it doesn't matter if they are anxious or nervous. What brain fingerprinting simply measures, is the information stored in the brain.
Jennifer Mathews: Farwell says his test may even help identify, some of today's most wanted man.
Larry Farwell: We can use brain fingerprinting to detect, who has been involved in planning or carrying out or helping to carry out, the September 11's attack.
