Dr. Les Linet: I am a board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist as well as an adult psychiatrist, board certified. Attention-Deficit disorder actually is also a life-long condition in people who have born with it; they don't develop it. It's not diagnosed usually until some period later in childhood. The average age is the fourth grade. The reason for that is that by the fourth grade, you are considered more complicated and you are expected more to behave like a little adult. In kindergarten, first grade, you can run around, and not paying attention, it just doesn't show up as much, but let me explain what Attention-Deficit Disorder is. It has got a variety of names. In colonial America, there was a poem written about “fidgety Phil who couldn't sit still”. I don't remember the rest of the poem and that's not important. He didn't get any diagnosis but you can imagine that Phil was in a school half and didn't sit still and then in order to teacher and the teacher probably talked with his parents and he was a difficult child. Later, we got to understand that it wasn't really Phil's fault; it was some kind of a neurotic problem. It had to do with parents' weird raising child and correctly being brought to the training whatever. Then we got a few other standards better and realizing basically it has to do with the way the nervous system is built. That name has been changed to Minimal Brain Dysfunction but it was dropped after a while, Minimal Brain Dysfunction as abbreviated MBD was often thought of as Minimal Brain Damage which isn't suited and sound too good. So we changed it to Hyper Kinetic Syndrome but that emphasized the fidgety Phil product and not some of the other aspects. What is involved with Attention-Deficit Disorder is difficulty in focusing the candy over-activity, hyperactivity and the impulsivity. The current name, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder not so long I have recalled it, Attention-Deficit Disorder, two types; with hyperactivity and without hyperactivity since 1987 because the age back, it's called the ADHD but it can't be any intensive type. If I were in-charge of naming it, I would give it another name because Attention-Deficit Disorder while it's an improvement over fidgety Phil and Minimal Brain Dysfunction and Hyper Kinetic Syndrome, it's somewhat confusing sometimes. I have had Johnny in here and I see him and I said, “Johnny, have you any trouble in learning”, and he was having some behavioral problems. I told his mom and dad that Johnny had Attention-Deficit Disorder and sometimes they'll say, “I don't think so.” Now, I know what's going to happen because I have gone through this a number of times, they are going to tell me that he can pay attention whenever he wants to. A typical example is your son has computer, playing computer games for seven hours, it doesn't bother you but when he is not doing that, he is having some part, pulling his sister's hair, chasing the cat, making the mess of the house, doesn't get his homework done. He can pay attention when he wants to but that's really not what's happening. He can pay attention when it's interesting to him, when it's stimulating to him. I would rename this condition if I were the one naming it, Research Stimulation Disorder. If you give them stimulation, they are okay; if you give them something that's tedious, something that anybody might find tedious that we know, if you don't finish this form, nothing get done, it's harder for them. So Attention-Deficit Disorder is rule of like sitting in traffic. If you are in a car with friends and you have radio on and the car is moving, as compared to the same radio station, with same companions, same cost, stuck in traffic, that's what Attention-Deficit Disorder is like. It makes people feel nuts.
