Hello! My name is Adrian Richards. I am a plastic and cosmetic surgeon. This time, we'll talk to you about different types of incisions you can have with tummy tuck surgery. So tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, mini abdominoplasty. In other word that sometimes used is Apronectomy. So all words basically used to describe tummy tuck surgery, and I've talked about these in other videos.
So today I am specifically talking about where the incisions are. Most people want the incisions low. In the case, if you got a cesarean scar, cesarean scars can vary in high quite a lot. And that can be quite low or they can be slightly high depending on your surgeon. And if you've multiple cesareans, sometimes you'll have two or three scars, the normal practice now with cesareans is surgeons remove the old scar. But some surgeons would do another cut which would leave you with different incisions.
Okay, so the first thing to do is really assess where your cesarean scar is the normal practice with a tummy tuck surgery is rather than give you another scar on top of the old cesarean is to remove the your cesarean scar and just give you one scar.
Okay. So in the '80s there was a real fashion for a quite a high waisted scar which of course, wanted to underway wound and those times a bit more. So that was more, that's called to be U-shaped scar. So flat, then going quite high up in the waist.
There was also a trend to do what was called the double U-shaped scar. So that's got the high lateral area but with a slight V in the middle. And this really is for that fashion with most surgeons because sort of under-wearing clothing people where tend to wear now with low cutting jeans and things. That lateral part of the scar, it can sometimes be visible. So we're tending very much more to much lower scars.
So the scar with now-a-days, would tend to be below the cesarean and you really need to discuss this with your surgeon where the scar is going to be and then it would extend out sideways in gentle cuff the quite low below the bony prominences of your hips. So if you feel your hip, the scar should be below that.
How far does the scar need to go? Well it needs to go as far as the tissue is. So if you're just being carrying your children in the front, and you just got the excess tissue in the front, the scar doesn't need to go as far out as if you perhaps lost weight and in your pregnancy you've more weight on this side.
So the scar needs to be adjusted to you and you know various cesarean cases, technically it was called extended abdominoplasty where we take the scar out to the side to remove that tissue there.
So lengthen the scars root and on yourself, tend to favor a low scar and what I do quite often is ask the patient to bring in either bikini or underwears she would like to wear and we can actually designed the scar to lie within that sort of clothing.
