Abortions and Confidentiality

Annie: Hi! My name is Annie and I am from Trenton New Jersey. And I was just curious about when a person decides to get an abortion how confidential is it?

Dyan Aretakis: Annie the question about confidentiality in abortion has a couple of different elements to it, first of all medical records are private. So when you have a medical procedure done, those records are considered confidential, and only you have access to that information. If you are under 18 the laws will change a little bit. And they vary from state to state. So I can't tell you exactly what the level of confidentiality would be. But in some states if you are under 18 to have an abortion your parent, or parents need to either be notified or they need to actually give you consent.

In ever state where that parental involvement is required. There is also an option to go to the Juvenile courts and meet with the Juvenile judge and that would in lieu of talking with your parents
