I believe acting can be pretending just like when you play as a child. It is as honest as child's play. One commits oneself to the action. The lack of 'truefullness' in an actors performance often comes from a conscious or unconscious self-awareness and from also the demonstrating of the proposed action. It can feel real for moments of performance but it isn't so therefore something has to be pretending.
