Welcome to this weeks Growing Wisdom and today, I want to talk specifically about Echinachea and Echinachea is one of the those great plants that really no perennial garden should be without. Echinachea is – depending on the variety can be hardy from zone four, five, six, seven. Some of them are a little bit temperamental but if you can find the right one, it will comeback in your zone.
One of the things that I have found that my Echinachea tends to like is, they do not like to be over watered and I also find that they do not like too much fertilizer. They tend of sort of like to be left alone and they will do better. Another thing that has happened, sort of in the Echinachea world is that you have gotten a lot of Echinachea development to give you lots of new colors.
So what I want to do now is go through of few of the different varieties that are really nice. This is one series called the big sky series, and the one that I am standing amongst now is actually called Sundown. And Sundown is this wonderful sort of a pinky, orange color, and this is just a beautiful color. And as you can see, has these great wide flowers, wonderfully standing out with the center just being so dark, it lets the petals stand out a little bit and this plant actually has a little bit of a scent as well, and the scent is fantastic.
This variety of Echinachea or Coneflower is actually called Twilight, and the interesting thing about this, is it has a rose like fragrance. It has got this bright orangey, pink color, the smell of this one is absolutely just fantastic. Here is our third variety of Echinachea, this one is called Alaska and how appropriately named because when you think of Alaska, of course, you think of cold and snow. And this is a brilliant white one, in this particular variety will look just really great paired with almost anything because it is going to stand out.
On the variety number four, and this one is called the Harvest Moon. You think about fall and you think about that big moon coming up and how beautifully orange it looks. Take a look at how beautiful this flower is, look at the center of it, how big it is and the way that the petals just kind of droop around there. This really is an eye catching Echinachea and again this one is called Harvest Moon.
On to our fifth and final Echinachea, and this particular one is called, Kim’s Knee High. And look what it looks like in real life, it is just that wonderful electric pink petals tend to droop around that center and the center will continue to grow as the flower matures taking you right into fall.
We have told you about five different Echinachea’s today, and there is many more varieties than that but I have just give you a few. Look for the one that is going to really fit in with your garden. I am sure there is one for you and remember, always smell them because somebody’s Echinachea’s smell absolutely wonderful.
