Shalom, the question today about the Myths of the series is. Do we have the ability today and right today to establish new Mitzvoth? Now the reason I ask this question is that all commandments are suppose to be from the Torah. And even though the authorities disagree over exactly what other commandments in the Torah, we all agree they are all from the Torah. However when we say the lighting candles, we say “(Foreign Language) Hanukkah”. “You sanctified us by your commandments and commanded us to kill the lights of Hanukkah”. Now Hanukkah is not in the Torah’s, it is not even in the bible except a little bit on the book of Daniel maybe. But it is not in the bible. It is in the post bill book of literature and the book of Maccabees in the apocrypha.
So how can we say that we can not Mitzvoth, if the Rabbi’s added the Mitzvoth chronicle even though it is not from the Torah. Well what means what would you add today Fact in high may very prominent Toronto professor said that after to holocaust we should add the commandment do not forget the holocaust. And of course two of the greatest and most important invents in Jewish history, one horribly-horribly sad and one joyful. One the holocaust and the other the establishment of the state of Israel, both occurred in the last hundred years and last 60 years. And both are remarkable event after 2000 years we finally have a Jewish date again. The worst event in Jewish history, the holocaust, both happened in the last 60 years. Surely those are remarkable enough to justify Mitzvoth.
Now we have a serious challenge of assimilation. Do we not need to add a new Myth of ways to deal with that like saying it is a Myth for to go Jewish day school? It is a Myth for to go to camp Ramar or some other Jewish intensive camp system. Why can we not add new Mitzvoth? Well we in fact have added new Mitzvoth. For example, Yomah’s mood Israel Independence Day we were said Hallel and there is a Braha to Hallel. You commanded us to say Hallel because most Jews consider Yomah’s, mode Israel’s Independence Day a holiday a Mitzvahto observe. Now some Jews do not like Lubavitch. They do not sing Atikla even. But most Jews recognize that as a very significant day in Judaism and a new Mitzvahhas been created. There is all kinds of rituals and community services now for the holocaust and then our synagogue also for Crystal Nact and the November 9th taken on the way of Mythsvah.
So the question is do we have new Mitzvoth? Well some people even change Brocus my view is that you got to be very careful about changing legal systems. Legal systems are much preferred to reinterpret than to add. And so for example, do we have Mitzvoth that can say that it is a Mitzvoth that can say it is a Mitzvoth to give your child the best Jewish education experience possible. Like Camp Rama, like Salma chapter day school, Jewish summer camps, Jewish day schools, youth group, the best form of education you can. And have the riches Jewish home experience you can.
Well yes, we have a Mitzvahand my Monatis positive Mitzvoth number 11. He said it is the obligation of everyone to learn Torah and to teach it to others. Based on Deuteronomy Chapter 6 from the Schma where it say (Foreign Language)
And specifically it says “You shall teach your children diligently”. He expands it to others, but of course they are specifically to teach your children and we have the concept if they do a Mitzvah of doing at the best way you can. So we do not need a new Mitzvah to save day school and summer camp. Just to teach that Mitzvoth and reinterpret it or say that today that means. In fact in Atoma when it talks about obligations of parents to children, it talks about teaching them Torah. And so, I do not really think we need a new Mitzvah.
Now how about the holocaust? Well have the Mitzvah at forum time of remember Ama Lake. Now Ama Lake, no body even knows what Ama Lake is anymore or was really and we read about the Torah and the bible. But take that Mitzvah and the day before Porem to reflect on the Nazi’s and the holocaust. In fact some people do, we got the story of Ama lake and a god created a mid-rush siring somebody who began the ancestor of Haymen and Porem so it links Ama Lake to Porem, which a hundreds and hundreds of years apart. And so we can link Haymen and Porem to Hitler of the Nazi’s and use that Mitzvah to teach about the importance of not forgetting the holocaust, the course of anti-Semitism.
What about the establishment of the state of Israel? Well have there a lot of stories and Mitzvoth about it. Pilgrimage to Israel, settling Israel, some of the great stages that it is Mitzvah to live in Israel and teach those Mitzvoth and the basis of celebrating the establishment of the state of Israel. So I think for whatever comes up in Jewish history. We already got 613 roughly. If you are orthodox you think exactly 613, if you are not orthodox, you think there is a lot of them. But 613 was sort of a just a way to say there was a lot. Any case lots of Mitzvoth, a hundreds of which ought to play anymore because we do not live Israel. For those who do not live Israel and because the temple is destroyed, so there is still hundreds to observe. We probably can fit whatever happens to Jewish history into the existing Mitzvah. We just need to teach Mitzvoth. In fact some great say, just that all the 613 could be fitted into the 10 commandments. On any case that is my view of should we be adding Mitzvoth? Let us teach them what we have. Let us interpret them from modern times. If things occur in Judaism to build on the traditional rubrics, so we do not further divide the Jewish people and we have the common language of the Mitzvah system already established by the greats of Jewish history like my Monitis , shalom.
