Now we are going to use this frame that we have just created, so let's go back to the Main Selection Tool, we don't need to use that tool again. You will notice that by default this should have a black stroke around it. You can see now here in the Tools Palette, the fill here with a diagonal red line through it suggests there is no fill, it's transparent, but by default it does have a black stroke.
If this is the case and you are seeing this on your machine, it may change depending on if you have been playing with InDesign in the past, go ahead and click on that black stroke to bring that to the front, that's the editable item and now click here on the None icon to remove the stroke from this object.
Now because it has no fill and no stroke, if you click in the center of that frame and try move it around, you will notice that you can't do so. So you must click on the outside of the frame so then we will be able to pick it up and drag it around the screen.
Now do bear in mind, we are using the Main Selection Tool for this, this is very important. If you want to pick up an element and move it around the Direct Selection Tool here, the hollow white arrow is not the tool that you want to use. I see a lot of people use this one, I am teaching them, it's a confusion that comes across from Illustrator, but it is a tool that we will use for accessing the content of a frame later on, i.e. a picture, but when you are moving anything, always the Selection Tool.
So what we are going to do is let's position this frame so it snaps into the right-hand side of the first column here, so on this very first margin line, and then adjust the width so it snaps on to the left-hand side of the right column, so it spans over these three areas here. What we will also do is change the height, so it goes up beyond the outside of the page and snaps to the very outer bleed area and then take the bottom center point and drag all the way down of the bottom of the page until that snaps into the bleed area as well.
Now you should have noticed that every time you drag one of these points near to a guideline that exist, it will snap it into place ensuring the accuracy of everything we do inside of InDesign. This is a great thing, you can always guarantee that everything is in the right place.
Now this is currently filled with nothing, we do want to make a brief change to that. So let's come down to the Color Palette on the right-hand side and just pop-open the Swatches Palette that we stored down here. Again we have currently got the stroke selected which is none, if we did choose black at this point it would just add another black stroke back to the object.
Let's switch across to the other icon here to select the Fill Color, so bring that to the front, go down and choose Black and you will see that shape now fill its entirety with a 100% black. What we will do is come here to the Tint Slider and drop that down to around 20%.
Now we will change this later on to a transparent object, but we want to use this just for position right now which is why we filled it with a lighter color because the next thing we want to do is put type on top of this.
