Okay. So now that all the clips are sorted, let's go ahead and switch to our Editing Workspace. Go back to your Window Menu and select Workspace>Editing.
Hmm, interface looks kind of funny. Well, the last time we were in the Editing Workspace, this is the way we left it; this was right before we saved our new workspace for screening.
So there is a quick and easy way to restore any workspace to its default setting. Go back to the Window Menu, select Workspace, and then select the last selection at the bottom, Reset Current Workspace. You will see a dialog that says, Are you sure you want to reset Editing to its original layout? Go ahead and click Yes. You can see now the workspace has been restored.
Let's go over the Project Panel and change to the List View and twirl up any open bins by clicking on the little triangle just to the left of the bin. You can see that you can also view the clips in your bin simply by twirling them open. So let's go ahead and twirl open the Jim bin, and let's go ahead and take the clip, Jim Interview.mov, and load it into the Source Monitor by double clicking. Let's make this Source Monitor bigger so we can see the clip, and now go ahead and hit the L key on your keyboard to play the clip back.
[Clip Playing - 00:01:25 - 00:02:13]
Okay, interesting interview from one of the doctors, Jim. Rather long. So what we are going to do is cut this interview down, remove some of the dead space, some of the hmms and ahs, and then what we will do is cut to different shots that will illustrate what he is talking about.
So let's start by putting this clip into a new sequence. Come back to your Project Panel and click on the New Item button. You will see a menu of different items that you can create. Go ahead and select the first one, Sequence.
So Sequence is basically where you assemble your Edit. First of all, we are going to want to give our sequence a name, so let's call it Jim Interview. You will see that you are presented with a number of different options. Now, for our purposes, we can accept the default settings, and by the way, you can always change these settings later on, so don't worry about getting it perfect right now. But you will see that we are starting with a default amount of Video Tracks, which is 3, and also the default amount of Audio Tracks, which is 3 Stereo Audio Tracks.
Go ahead and click the OK button to accept these default settings. You will now see a new Timeline, and also in the Program Monitor, in the upper right corner, you will see that it's displaying Jim Interview. So in other words, anything that's displayed in the Timeline will also be visible in the Program Monitor.
Let's bring the clip from the Source Monitor down to the Timeline, simply by clicking and dragging it down to the first track, which is called Video 1. Before you release your mouse button, make sure the clip lines up with the left edge of the Timeline. Once its there, release your mouse button, and the clip is now in the Timeline and the Program Monitor.
Let's give ourselves a little bit more room for the Program Monitor, just by clicking and dragging it over to the left. Great!
Let's go back to the Timeline. You can see that, well, we have got this clip, but its not really filling the entire length of the Timeline, that would be pretty useful. So go ahead and click your Timeline to select it and then hit the Backslash key (\) on your keyboard; that's the key right above the Return key. That's a very handy keyboard shortcut that fits the contents of your Timeline to fill it.
