So now let's create a workspace to screen our footage. What we are going to do is put the Source Monitor on the left which is where we will view our clips and we are going to put the Project panel on the right.
First of all takes the Source Monitor which is nested behind the Program Monitor and click-and-drag it by the five little dots all the way to the left side of the interface. Great. Now take your Project panel and nest it in with the panels to the right the Effect Controls and the Audio Mixer, and finally let's go ahead and close the Program panel all together. You can do that by clicking on the little x to the right of its name.
Now let's save our workspace by going back to the Window menu and selecting Workspace>New Workspace. Let's call this workspace Screening. Go ahead and type in the word Screening and then click OK, and finally let's give our Source Monitor a little bit more room. So bring your courser to where the Source Monitor and Project panel intersect and then click-and-drag to the right.
Let's go ahead and screen the first clip. So go ahead to the clip called Boys in Sand at the top of your Project panel and double-click it. That loads the clips inside the Source Monitor on the left hand side. Let's take a look at some of the buttons at the bottom of the Source Monitor. You will see that there are buttons here just like on a VCR for Play, Step Forward or Step Backward. There is a slider beneath that to Shuttle and then a Jog wheel at the very bottom. But I am actually going to have you use your keyboard to play your clips back.
The reason why I had you set up the workspace this particular way, is that you can work much, much faster by using both hands. So if you are a right-handed person, you going to want to put your left hand on the keyboard putting your index finger on the letter L. Your middle finger on the letter K and your ring finger on the letter J. You will want to have your right hand on the mouse as you normally would.
Now of course if you are left-handed you will want to reverse those instructions and in fact you might want to set your screening workspace the opposite as well. Now the J K L combination on the keyboard lets you very easily play backwards and forwards in a variety of speeds. Try hitting the L key on your keyboard and you will see it plays the clip forward in real time.
Now try hitting the J key. It plays the clip backward in real time. The K key will pause, but you are going to use it actually a combination of the K, J, and L keys to do certain things. Now let's say you want to play forward at maybe two X or 4X real time to quickly scan through a clip. Try hitting the L key twice and you will see that it plays the clip two times real time. Now hit the J key twice, it does the same thing in reverse and you can continue hitting L or J multiple times to increase the playback speed to two times, four times and as fast as eight times the speed, and remember you can always pause by hitting the K button.
Now if you want to roll the clip forward to backward slowly, which is really useful when you want to identify specific Edit points. Try holding down the K key and the L key at the same time, and you will see that it plays the clip forwards in slow motion. Now try K and J and that let's you play reverse in slow motion. So as we go through this training when you are working in Premiere Pro try to keep your left hand on J, K and L keys and your right hand on the mouse.
