Now the same JKL key combination, I taught you earlier can also be used here in the timeline. So let's use those keys to play forward a little and look for the first spot where we maybe able to cut something out.
Go ahead and pause and roll back to the beginning. You can see what I did was I hit the J key several time, so of course you can do that too to roll back quickly. The first thing out of his mouth was the word, well. We can certainly cut that out. It's not necessary. So what we are going to do is set an In point on the timeline.
This is going to be done in two different ways. Let's go back to the Program Monitor and you will see the same exact buttons that you see in the Source Monitor. Over to the left of the player controls, you will see a whole set of buttons and go ahead and hover your mouse over the button in the upper left corner. You will see that's the button to set an In point. Go ahead and click it. Great.
So now let's roll to the frame right after he says the word, well. Once again, use your JKL keyboard combination and I am going to hold down the K key and roll forward slowly by holding down K and L together. Go ahead and try it.
And we can stop right there right after he says the word well. You can now see the value of playing backwards and forward slowly. So to set an Out point here let's go to the button to the right of the one we just clicked and you can see that's the button to set an Out point. Go ahead and click there.
We have now marked an In and Out on our timeline and if you go back to the timeline, you can actually see that area is now marked off right here in our ruler. Now what we are going to want to do is extract the piece of the video in between the In point and Out point. So we will do that by going back to the Program Monitor and now looking at the set of buttons on the right side. We are going to come to the button right here in the lower row in the center. This button is called the Extract button. Go ahead and click that.
Well, if you look at my Timeline, you may notice that my audio was extracted but not my video. You may have had different results than me. Well, the reason for this, is that my video track is actually not selected. Whenever you want to extract something from the timeline you have to make sure that those particular tracks are selected. So let's go ahead and undo by going to the Edit menu and selecting Undo. Of course, you can use the Command+Z or Ctrl+Z keyboard shortcut.
And now let's go ahead and click on the Video 1 track, that's on the name of the track to select it and you can see now that it's highlighted. So once again let's go back to the Program Monitor and click on the Extract button. Great. The extraction was made. Let's go ahead and do another keyboard shortcut. Hit the Home key on your keyboard. That will bring your current time indicator to the beginning of the timeline and now go ahead and play back to see the edit, and then stop your play back.
Now that was pretty good, but there is still a lot of silence before he starts speaking. So I am just going to show you a different method of getting rid of unwanted material from your clips. We are going to use the Trim Tool. Let's make the timeline a little bit bigger.
And then let's go back to the beginning of the sequence. You can hit the Home key like I showed you just a moment ago or you can also take the current time indicator, that's that blue triangle with the red line running beneath it and simply click and drag it all the way to the left.
Now bring you cursor to the very beginning of the clip in Video Track 1. You will see it actually changes into a trim icon indicating that you can now click and drag to trim the In point which is the beginning of the clip. So hold your mouse button down and drag to the right.
In the Program Monitor above you can actually see the frame that you are trimming to. Let's find the frame, maybe a few frames before he opens his mouth to speak and when you got it there, release your mouse button. Let's go ahead and play that back to see the edit, and then stop play back.
Alright, that's great but of course, now we have got a bunch of blank space at the beginning of the sequence. That's fixed very, very easily. Just move your cursor off of the beginning of the clip, you will see the icon changes back to the Standard Selection Tool and now let's simply click and drag the clip to the left to line up with the beginning of the timeline. Great!
