The last thing we are going to look at is a little bit about how to set up tabs inside of InCopy. We will select this little bit of text here which looks like a perfect candidate for either tabs or tables and speaking of tables if you do use a lot of tabs to format your text, I would encourage to reconsider and think about using tables. We will cover tables in a lot more details later in the training but for now I will give you a cursory overview of tabs.
With my text selected, I will go to the type menu and open the tabs palette. Now, by default, the tabs palette may be kind of floating off from the side of the page or wherever but what we will do is choose view, say fit page in Window and then on the right hand side of my tabs palette, I am going to click this tiny little magnet icon.
What that will do is snap. It snaps the tabs palette to the top of the frame I am working at. Now, I do have to warn. Normally, this feature works very predictably for me but occasionally on a Windows platform, it had some inconsistencies specifically the tabs work just as I expect but when I click that magnet icon, it does not always snap to the top of the text frame.
So, be warned that that is a possibility. The tabs still work. You will just have to manually position the tabs palette at the top of your text frame to make your previous that much easier.
Now, let us take a look at the top of the tabs palette here. There are really four kinds of tabs that you can create. There are left justified tabs, centered justified tabs. We also have right justified tabs and then we have the small aligned tabs. We will look at all four examples before we are done.
To create a tab, just select the kind you want to create and then click above the ruler here and then to move that tab position, just drag it on the ruler. As I move the tab along the ruler, you will notice that the text below is moving along with it. If I am going to make another tab, I just click again further down the ruler and I going to kind of move that into position just how I like.
If I have a very specific measurement where I exactly want that tab to fall, I can type that value up here in the position field. For example, let us say I want this tab to be exactly at 3.5 inches, click return and that tab will align exactly to that measurement.
