Now this introduces this quite nicely the keyboard shortcuts and I think this is one of the most power futures of InDesign and it has got even better inside of CS2.
What we are going to do is if you go to the edit menu now, go down to the bottom, you will see an option for keyboard shortcuts. I want you to go ahead and choose that and what we will see is the keyboard shortcut dialog box when we can customize ever command inside of InDesign CS.
Now what we see initially is the default setup here at the top. Now these are just the standard keyboard shortcuts that shift with every version of InDesign. If you have look at that option, you can see that there are also shortcuts here for the page maker seven uses. They do not have to change all of that keyboard shortcuts and also for crochet express four uses. However, I do recommend that you stay on the default settings because most of these keyboard shortcuts are exactly the same as once use inside the illustrator and Photoshop so it makes much easiest as switch between these programs if you end up using those same shortcuts.
Now what we are going to do here though is create our own new set because we want to keep this set as they are, but we have our own which means we can also save it to other machines and pull them up if we want to use those shortcuts in another location. So click the new set button here on the right hand side and we are just going to name this, let us call this one Steven in this case or whatever name you wish to use, but do make sure that it is set to be base on the default command set. So we are using the standard InDesign shortcuts to build from, go ahead and click okay.
Now the way that they style box works is it gives us the product areas here at the top and this basically relates to the menus that you see inside of InDesign. So if you look here, you have the file menu edit the other menu palettes, all these different options that you have seen already and then anyone of these that you choose that shows you all of the standard commands that are available underneath that menu and anyone that you select it will show you if there is a keyboard command assign to it right here.
Now what we are going to do is change a few of these. I am certainly not suggesting that we change all of them. In my workings InDesign, I found that there are many shortcuts in here which do not actually make sense. So it is a good idea to customize them before we get head long into the program.
For example, under the file menu option here for product area. If you go down and choose the place command, you can see that the default is set to control +D. Now I know this is a legacy command from outer versions of page maker, but inside of crock express, I believe the same command is control E. Well to me control +D seems to make the most sense when it is assigns to duplicate something. As soon as you copy something with the option key to a new location and hit control +D, it will continue to duplicate using those same settings. That is how we illustrate the works on Photoshop, control +D is to deselect something.
So personally, I would rather see this command assign to duplicate. If you come up here to the product area and choose the edit menu option, come down and choose duplicate, you can see the current keyboard shortcut for that is actually shift control +alt +D, so lots of keys to hold down for such a very simple shortcut.
So what we will is let us go up to the file menu option again, scroll down the list and choose place. What we will do is we will select the default control +D command that is there and remove that over here on the right hand side and then when we say new shortcut that assign alt + shift +P and that is current on assign. You can see, it shows up here at the bottom and on the Mac that was simply be shift option P. That is an assign to anything else so we know it is safe to use, we can go now and click the assign button on the right hand side and that is now stored as part of this particular set.
You can see the save button is now active here at the top as well as,
