What’s up? This is Austin Kritzer of Paradigm for freeandeasyguitar.com. And today, I’m going to build on my last tutorial on tapping and I’m going to show you guys a new tapping lick. It’s a lot more difficult than the previous stuff that I’ve shown you.
Basically, this is a lot more advanced technique but it’s one of those licks that are really cool. And once you can play it, you’ll never forget how to play it. And it’s really fun to play and it’s pretty impressive to play in front of people and people will really seem to like it. You might have to excuse to my tone today. I’m running through a program for Line 6. The program is actually really nice. Unfortunately, my computer isn’t. So I will endorse Line 6 but I will not endorse Dell.
So anyway, with that being said, the riff is from the Trivium song The Crusade of the album “The Crusade”, and it’s a really fun riff. It’s kind of addicting to play, too. But it sounds like this. [Demonstration]
So it’s basically the same pattern just on the B and A strings. I’m sorry, you have to excuse my tone. It’s a little bit on the high end and it cuts in and out. But basically, this is going to be a hard one to explain, so if I mess up, you’re going to have to excuse me. For this thing, you just kind of learn how to play it and really don’t think about what you’re doing, at least after a while it gets like that. But basically, it starts out right hand on the—the whole thing is either on the B string or the A string and you can tell because it gets really low. [Guitar Playing]
So for right now, we’re just going to focus on the B string because that’s how the word is introduced anyway. So here we go. It starts out on the 12th fret, and you hit it and pull off. [Demonstration] You do it with your right hand [Demonstration]. And then immediately after that, you go to seven and eight. So far, you got this [Demonstration]. So 12, 0, 7, 8. Then it moves up to 15, 0, 7, 8, so it sounds like this. [Demonstration] So 12, 0, 7, 8, 15, 0, 7, 8.
So far, so good. [Demonstration] And then you’re going to go to 14, 0—now, here’s where it gets a little tricky on the timing. So it goes [Demonstration], okay? So 12, 0, 7, 8,15, 0,7, 8, 14, 0, 5, 7, 8, so it adds in that 5th fret right here, so it sounds like this [Demonstration].
And then moving on after that, so [Demonstration] after you hit that 8th, you go up and hit 17th fret on the B string, so [Demonstration]. So you’re almost done with the first half of the riff. So far you have this. [Demonstration]
Zoom in on your five-minute video player and I’ll try and call out the frets as I play it again, so 12, 0, 7, 8, 15, 0, 7, 8, 14, 0, 5, 7, 8, 17. And in the end after you hit the 17th, it’s [Demonstration]. So 17, 0, 2, 3, so the whole thing [Demonstration]. That’s the first half and that’s with the first ending. So far, you have this. [Demonstration]
So that’s part of the hardest part. The hardest part that I found was getting down with that 2, 3, and then back up to 7, 8 to repeat the riff. So you’re going to play the same thing for both times until you get to the ending. So the ending I’m going to play the whole way through once so you can pick up on the second ending. [Demonstration] So instead of going up to the 17th, so you get 12, 0, 7, 8, 15, 0, 7, 8, 14, 0, 5, 7, 8, 17 [Demonstration] and the ending for the second one is just [demonstration]. And right after you do that little hammer-on from the 7, 8 your 5, 7, 8 [Demonstration], instead of going 17, you go to 12 [Demonstration]. So you got 12, 0, 3, 5. So that’s the second ending, instead of going to 17, just go back to 12—it’s 12, 0, 3, 5 instead of 17, 0, 2, 3.
So basically, the whole riff sounds like this. I’ll play it slow and then speed up the tempo. [Demonstration] I’m sorry I messed up. I’m kind of doing it too slow. I’m going to try and call out the notes this time, so 12, 0, 7, 8, 15, 0, 7, 8, 14, 0, 5, 7, 8, 17, 0, 2, 3, 12, 0, 7, 8, 15, 0, 7, 8, 14, 0, 5, 7, 8, 12, 0, 3, 5, so that’s the whole riff. So up to speed, [Demonstration]
And then for the lower section, the only thing you do is you just move [Demonstration]. So basically, it’s the same exact thing, just on the A string. So the 5th string, if you don’t know your string notes. [Demonstration] You could just play the exact same thing up here. [Demonstration]
Actually, it sounds a little bit cleaner if you have neck pick up. As you see, this guitar does not. So when you’re practicing, save your friends some ear shock trouble. Switch to your neck pickup, it kind of smoothens everything out. But as you see, I don’t have one.
So basically, that’s the riff. Stick with it. It’s a tough riff to grab but once you get it, it sounds sweet. It’s really fun to play and it takes a lot of practice but definitely worth it.
