Rochelle: My name is Rochelle. I am from Jackson, Mississippi. Are there certain age groups at greater risk for cervical cancer? Dr. Lois Ramondetta: Rochelle, this is actually a disease mostly of young women. Although, older women will also be affected. Because it is sexually transmitted, many woman who are more sexually active when they are younger are exposed to this virus. The longer you've been in a relationship and not been exposed to the virus, the less likely you are to have any changes from the human papillomavirus. So there seem to be two peaks, one in the early ages in the 20s and 30s and one slightly older in the 40s. But every woman who has been sexually active at any time or any woman who has had cervical dysplasia is at risk for cervical cancer.
