AJ Vickery: It might actually look like we’re about to do a magic show here right now but we’re not. We’re going to demonstrate air filters and the reason why you might choose one filter over another and to help us understand a little bit more about that, we’ve got Gerry from 3M. Thanks for coming in today.
Gerry Oleksiuk: You’re welcome.
AJ Vickery: Let’s talk about that a little bit. We’ve got a couple of filters here and one is sort of a low cost version.
Gerry Oleksiuk: That’s correct.
AJ Vickery: That you might pick up in any hardware store and the other is the one that you guys make.
Gerry Oleksiuk: That’s correct.
AJ Vickery: And we’re going to show through this machine using smoke although not many people smoke in the office anymore but we’re going to show using smoke because it’s effective.
Gerry Oleksiuk: Yes.
AJ Vickery: In this demonstration, you’ll see how it works. Should we stick these guys in? You bet.
Gerry Oleksiuk: What we’re going to do here, I have taken a cigarette and cut it in half.
AJ Vickery: Okay.
Gerry Oleksiuk: And put one in that will fit into these two compartments and this one here will feed into those too. We have to turn on the fan here which will create a current of air going through.
AJ Vickery: Okay.
Gerry Oleksiuk: So, you can see how effective one filter is in removing smoke particles I supposed to the other.
AJ Vickery: Okay and so what’s the first thing, are you going to turn the fans off?
Gerry Oleksiuk: Well, I’m going to start with this one here.
AJ Vickery: So, one of the things that can happen is we’re going to fill up the entire chamber here full of smoke and the same thing down here, so as the smoke fills up inside this compartment.
Gerry Oleksiuk: Exactly, you can see the smoke coming in now.
AJ Vickery: Yeah.
Gerry Oleksiuk: And it’s filling those in, we’ll give it a 30 seconds or so to get that compartment good and full.
AJ Vickery: So, if you take a look at the top one here, you don’t see any smoke coming in at all.
Gerry Oleksiuk: Right and you should be. This one is starting to fill up with smoke eventhough the fan is passing a current through so that it’s filtering through both filters and both cigarettes are pretty well done here, so you can see this one is just a little bit of smoke left, it’s finally reaching the end.
AJ Vickery: That guy is real smoking hard over there.
Gerry Oleksiuk: That’s smoking hard. This one is cleaning it right up. This one here is smoking again and it is starting to fill up over there.
AJ Vickery: Starting to fill up with lots of smoke in there. You can really start to see, wow, that’s terrible! So, we’re using a smoke to demonstrate this because it’s easier for us to see with this device, but really today it’s not just about smoke, is it?
Gerry Oleksiuk: No, it’s not. No, you have other particles by way of dust and pollen and molds pores and bacteria that float around in the air.
AJ Vickery: Yeah.
Gerry Oleksiuk: And we breathe all that.
AJ Vickery: And this type of a filter technology that we’re looking at. This is something that might go into like a furnace at room or something like that but in a small office, you guys also do a sort of office size filters.
Gerry Oleksiuk: Yes we do. What we have installed here in both cases is a furnace filter.
AJ Vickery: Yeah.
Gerry Oleksiuk: Designed to work in your furnace. Now, for an office which may not have a four-stair furnace but still maybe on air conditioning or a feed from like a central system.
AJ Vickery: Yeah.
Gerry Oleksiuk: 3M does make an office air cleaner. It uses the same filtering material that we used in our furnace filters and something that you could put in a room.
AJ Vickery: So many people think about ergonomic these days, so they think about like, you know, that you're sitting position and the type of manner that you’re looking at and all this sort of stuff but what’s really important is also to think about the sort of quality of the work environment, so in terms of the light that you use but also the air that you breath.
Gerry Oleksiuk: Exactly, yeah. Within 3M, we have an area called workspace solution and that’s the ergonomics but we do consider air quality as part of that. You know hence our officer cleaner, we put in that category.
AJ Vickery: Thanks for coming. Thank you very much.
Gerry Oleksiuk: You’re welcome, thank you.
AJ Vickery: That’s Gerry from 3M and that’s something you’re going to want to think about. It looks like we’re going to take sort of that office environment to another level. I think more about ergonomics but also think about what kind of air you’re breathing. So now, we’re going to cut it in half.
