Big Think is a global forum connecting people and ideas. It may be a cliché to say that knowledge is power, but that doesn’t make the statement any less true. We know that there are just 24 hours in a day, that you are bombarded with information, and that the bombardment will only escalate. We believe that not all information is equal. We believe that expertise is invaluable and should be shared. If you had a heart problem and could afford the counsel of the world’s leading cardiologists, you would seek their advice. If you owned a business and wanted to expand into China or Russia, you’d want to hear from people who had already done that. At Big Think, we put you in contact with the ideas of very smart people. We do not believe that experts have all the answers. On many subjects deep thinkers disagree. We do believe that we will all make better decisions in our personal and professional lives if our thinking is informed by expert opinion.

Given that no civilization can be completely aware of any and all potential threats, it seems like a further extension of that logic that we should not (or possibly, cannot) interfere with that process. For example, if the Scottish culture of the early half of the millennium was not subdued by the dominant British Empire of the same time, is it possible that the conditions under which Alexander Fleming discovered antibiotics may not have existed, impairing the long term survivability of not only west, but all of h
