Christine: Hi, my name is Christine from Haverhill, Massachusetts. And I've a question. Does drinking alcohol really help you sleep better?

Peter Galier: Well Christine, again a very good question, alcohol can make people feel very relaxed. It can actually help people get to sleep. Alcohol sits on the receptors in the brain that many prescription drugs sit on to help people get to sleep.

The problem with alcohol is that it has a very short half life and it weirs of quickly. So although alcohol can make you feel relaxed and help you fall asleep it will not help you stay asleep and in many times you will wake up feeling worse than when you went to bed.
