All right let’s talked about Microsoft silver light what it is and should you use it? well to talked about with silver light is, let’s first talked a little bit about web video in general when it comes web video there are two primary formats in the web. Number one, is flash which is from adobe and number two, is quick time which is from apple. And of the two adobe flash is by far and away the winner on the web. Basically just about every website you go to on the web that has video is going to use flash and that include sites like You Tube all the way to sites like this one. We all use flash video again it’s the dominant format. Now what Microsoft is doing with silver light, is they’re trying to compete with adobe flash. In other words silver light is Microsoft version of flash.
Now if you watched the 2008 Summer Olympics online you saw Microsoft silver light in action. That’s because the Olympics were broadcast using Microsoft silver lights. So if you're a web video producer should you consider using Microsoft silver light, well in my opinion I really don’t see a reason why you would again. Flash is the dominant format, it’s tried and true. It’s what people used, it’s what's 99% of the people who browse the internet can watch videos in.
Now by comparison only about 25% of people on the internet have this silver light plug-in installed. So if you do a video in silver light, you just had to remember that about 75% of the people coming to your website they're not going to be able to watch your video until they download your plug-in. Now a few months back, I did a review of Microsoft silver light on my blog and it caught the attention of a couple of people from the silver light team at Microsoft and they left some comments. So if you like to see what Microsoft had to say about my review of silver light just go to WebVideoUniversity.com/blog and you can search for my silver light post. But again bottom line is, if you're a video producer stick with flash, stay away from silver light at least for now there is not a compelling reason why you should switch formats I'm David Kaminski of Web Video University.
