Sherri Dmyterko: Eating on the run seems to be a normal part of life for many of us and with a busy lifestyle, it can be easy to fall short on consuming enough key nutrients that you need everyday for good health. So what's the solution? Dietitian Helene Charlebois says you want to invest in foods that give you the biggest return, such as almonds.
Helene Charlebois: Almonds are great for snacking because they are so versatile and they are easy to put in a bag, you just take a handful of almonds and they are actually called the super food and super foods are nutrient dense, meaning that you are getting a lot of nutrients in a small amount of food and almond are very high in protein, copper, magnesium and Vitamin-E, fiber as well.
Sherri Dmyterko: Recent studies also indicate that almonds may play an important role in the prevention of certain chronic diseases.
Helene Charlebois: There is lot of recent study today around almonds particularly I have found in one study of the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry that deems almonds very high in antioxidants comparable to Broccoli and green tea. Antioxidants are really important in the fight against free radicals. Antioxidants have been proven to really reduce chronic diseases such as heart disease and stroke.
Almonds are high in protein and also high in very good fats. Good fats are things like Polyunsaturates and Monounsaturates and because they are plant source there is absolutely Trans fat, so very good for you. Also because of their fat content, they are very satiating and satiating means that you will feel fuller longer and that's really a great thing.
Sherri Dmyterko: And incorporating almonds into your diet is easy and the variety is endless.
Helene Charlebois: For example, at breakfast throw some slivered almonds on your granola or any of your favorite cereal. At last you can just set almonds as a protein source to your solids any meal, anytime for snack, almond is a just a great food.
