Amazon Kindle 2 - Unboxing
Hey you guys, Jon Rettinger here with an unboxing for you of the Amazon Kindle 2. This is an eReader so it’s way to read without the paper. Let's go ahead and unbox it this is straight from Amazon the packaging that will come in.
Open up the obligatory big knife down there. I just go ahead and dig in. This is a little bit on the expenses side for the device this is a run you top $359.00 right now it’s only available on the US. And unlike the first Kindle this does not come with a cover, the cover is in the other $30.00 I'm sure you pack that into your purchase so you're probably looking at around $400.00 total. Here we've got the Kindle cover that should be the K for us commentary.
Let's go ahead and open this thing up first. Just in cardboard very eco friendly for Amazon that a little full tab here. We’ll go ahead and full that open. There the packing stuff there. This is my first digital reader I've ever had so I'm very curious to see what it looks like consider this all some symbols and letters in there and this is Amazon Kindle on kind of emboss black and it says, “Kindle stand on fire and fires stir up to catch fire or become animated.”
So, here's the actual cover itself and another little flat that was in. And this one doe’s feel like it’s made out of actual leather does pass the smell test. It’s got some cushioning here to protect the device and of all diagrams showing you how it fits in, rotate and snap. But that’s not what you guys here to see so this is the cover which I think everybody should definitely have. The Kindle—the front of the device actual doesn’t have any protection what you're reading is actually the E-Ink display without anything covering up.
So here is the Kindle itself, box just as Kindle there's no information on the side to let me know it’s assembled in China. There a little pull tab and nothing on the box. Go ahead and pull the tab here. I'm very excited to use this for most books even new releases and New York Times best seller there are about $10.00 on the single store and you know, as you get a hard cover book is generally $25.00 to $30.00 so you're looking at anywhere from $10.00 to $15.00 or possibly $20.00 savings on your book so if you do a lot of reading you can recruit the cost of the device that way.
Open it up again it got the certain emboss letters flowing. And here's the tray that comes in, some more of the unboxing right there. No cushion or anything just straight cardboard. So here is the device itself, it’s got that same sort of emboss color at the front trying to get that in the camera you can see it sort of flowing right there. There's Amazon Kindle right in the middle, there were full tab on the side and on the back you see there's more lettering. Let's go ahead and open this thing up. You get another tab, that one is a little bit easier, cardboard just come off and there's another cardboard here I'm going to full that up and there is the device itself Amazon Kindle.
It’s my first time actually holding one of this it has a nice weight to it but not too heavy it’s only a very thin I'll show you guys some size comparison in the moment. So it’s right here step to slide to release the power switch above your screen will refresh if you miss plug in your new Kindle. So we go ahead and do all that just a moment.
Let see what else comes in the box here. You can pull up to this tray. It’s actually made of a very hard plastic here. This is not cardboard so it’s nice to know things are protected in there but it does showing you that is recycled so that is always nice. We've got Amazon Kindle users guide in getting started. I probably never use that, not a directions kind of guy but if you are go ahead and take a look at that.
Here is the charger, let see what it is looks like. Very think for the US adapter right there. This actually uses a micro USB so it’s a standard port which is very nice I saw the cell phone use micro USB. And this right here pull it right off, plugs just in your USB cable so you can actually use this to charge your iPod or any other USB device. It’s kind of handy thing to have around. Plug that back in.
Let's take a look at the device itself. Amazon claims that this is actually thinner than any 3G phone. You can actually download books directly on here using Amazon Whisper Net. Essentially what that does that uses Sprints 3G and now over legacy now works to download books right through the device, so it’s actually never ever have to use a computer download your books. Just very cool it that sort of look like a first jet on iPod.
So let's do some size to comparison for this and get sense of how big and how thick it is I'll show you. There it is with the iPhone so it actually bigger. Here it is with the Pantech Matrix Pro you can see a pretty decent side comparison right there. Anyway comparer a normal size hard cover book for you guys can see a different here.
Here's one of my favorite book Jack Welch is Winning you can see that is significantly smaller so stock there on top. You can see a difference obviously what you're going to read is just a screen but size wise is significant difference. Let's go ahead and do a thickness comparison too and see what Amazon says there's true. Here's the iPhone the only phone that I have lying around right now and that is definitely a different right there you can clearly see that the Kindle is there and certainly it’s going to be thinner then, the Pantech as well. Here I've got the Samsung Epix, big difference there also.
So let's go ahead and take of the plastic. And I'll give you guys a hardware tour very quickly. So the cool thing about this E-Ink display is that the battery is only use when the image on the screen is changing, so right now this is actually on the screen but it’s not using up any battery. In fact, it makes it very neat. So in the front of it we've got a—actually I put it down here. I was zoomed in so you guys can see over. There we go.
Almost a Blackberry style cord the keyboard. Obviously that’s intended for thumb typing for looking a book in such. There's have a full row number key is across the top and you don’t have to use the keyboard in that much but before you need it before like this seems to be very usable. So one of the complaints people had at the previous Kindle was the next page who got extended across the entire side of it when you pick it up or just for reading you always skip that next page about there were a lot of complaints about it.
So it looks like Amazon fix that with this Kindle. You can't turn the next page button by hitting the outside its actually have to push the inside to make it click such eliminate the accidental presses. No click and made this to click. So there's your next page of button on top is a home button stays you back to obviously your home and shows you what you have downloaded. Previous page, the next page, so if you're left or right handed a menu button, a back button, and now a five ways little joystick toggle that also pushes in for that fit away.
The previous Kindle had a scroll wheel this will actually now let's you go left and right and kind of scroll all around here it such a very nice. They did get rid of the removable batter unfortunately so the battery is sealed in here but the do like Amazon is trying to improve battery life so let's see if that’s true. It’s got two speaker grills on the back before the speaking of functionality. But the selection you do is read the text to you. It sounds very computer and mechanical but it will surely detects which is kind of need actually.
I hope you guys can download that in and up coming video. So battery is sealed so nothing else to see in there. On top of the device you’ve got your power button and your 3.5 millimeter headset jack so you can listen to our book from headphone if you're on headphone. Nothing else really on the side, nothing on the side there accepts for volume up and down rocker. And that’s about it guys from the bottom is the charging port for that micro USB.
So that is just about it let's see if this has any power and it is all style new release switch above so we’re going to do that. Let see what happens. Yet to say you got to follow step one and plug this thing in first so I will do that and I'll show, nope there it goes doing some. Amazon Kindle look at that little bar flashing letting you know that is loading. All you got there that you guys see this in real time. And again, like I mention the E-Ink none of this is using any battery going battery it’s been use right now it just moving this bar across the top.
And the screen feels pretty secure but I wouldn’t want to put this is in the back and risk myself for getting damage on them. So definitely the case in the covers going to get something you're really going to want to invest in. so when you buy a Kindle it’s actually register it to your Amazon account so your information that’s already be there so this turns on at chip say Jon Kindle at least in theory. So let see if that does that once it finishes loading.
Refreshing two icons up there letting you know that it’s downloading and sinking. Welcome to Kindle. All right I go ahead and look at that later let's go home. Like hello so let's think that s all that taking care of acts just sinking up post me on the computer they're ready and going to put my kind of operation correctly when I purchase it. No, there it goes refresh.
Jonathan Kindle now it says right in the upper left hand corner so it really did a very nice job of—so you can get a self off automatically to download your item right now. Welcome Jonathan from Jeff Bezos who is the head of Amazon so that’s very cool. You just navigate—there's another line.
Hey guys I'm going to go give this a charge and it’s actually already got a decent charge in but I'm going to use the device and stay tune to rest of the week for new video showing some software future head of downloaded book and at the end showing you a point of view of the device.
I hope you guys enjoy and for exclusive content be sure to follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/jon4Lakers. I'll see you guys in the next video, bye-bye.
