An Interview with Emily Haines
I got a phone call from Edgar Wright saying that he wanted Metric to contribute a song to
the soundtrack for Scott Pilgrim versus the world and the soundtrack was being created
by Nigel Godrich I'm a huge fan of them so this is really exciting and meet Nigel. We
have a group meeting and really quickly realized that for what they were looking for we
actually had the perfect song which is a song called black sheep we retested it and it has
got something. So I said you know Edgar I think this is it and I played it for Nigel and
they totally agreed it’s actually creepy how well it fit.
Growing up, my brother was always showing me great writers that he really liked and I
did I was familiar with Bryan’s stuff and in fact really flattered because did draw an
inspiration for Metric shows into the Scott Pilgrim which really scared me as well
because Emily is like a total bitch and I was you know I talked to Bryan I was like I hope
that’s not supposed to be me is it like that’s not who I am and he said no of course not
that’s the nature of being an artist which I knew but I needed to hear it from him.
That you know they got some inspiration for clash the demon ahead from Metric but it’s
not supposed to be me. I couldn’t even be as a bad ass as he created you know she did a
great job at creating this character. Yeah I feel really flattered that we have been
approached by different directors throughout our crew. Actually on our first record Old
World Underground which like nobody has heard this film maker from France Olivier
Assayas found us and had us perform our song Dead Disco at the beginning of the movie
and it went on and did really well.
So usually when we have an opportunity to work with an artist we hope that we can make
it happen because it always leads to interesting things so yeah with that crew definitely
we are very flattered to have an ass. The definite highlight is you know meeting with
Anna Kendrick and meeting Jason Schwartzman and Michael Cera all those guys is like a
really really great cast. I'm really excited that’s the whole place of making music as you
get to collaborate with people and you know meet your heroes and like you know have
Nigel Godrich like working in your recording studio.
It’s really, really an honor it’s really cool. James and I are from Toronto the guitar player
but we met the drummer Josh and Joules the bass player in New York. And then we you
know kind of really started our whole life, things started in L.A. actually at the Silverlake
Lounge the world’s smallest venue but it’s a cool start and then we toured so much that it
sort of it all becomes one thing so you know we’re just really grateful we have great
audiences people when they come to Metric show bring a lot of energy and we try to
match that you know.
It’s really a scary gamble actually. We've decided to put Fantasies out on our own outside
of Canada it is not even like we stated a label even we just built a thing and because I
think maybe all those old ideas are kind of falling to the way side of like labels like what
is that. so we’re really pleased that it works and we actually we’re the first band to ever
get in the top 20 in the U.S. without a label so I hope that can serve as inspiration to other
bands that you know maybe or as music industry adverse.
We are really happy that we finally just have some leverage so now we can do
partnerships with other people so we can continue to develop it’s not about doing it all by
yourselves. So Fantasy is actually our last show proper tour show. It was a year and a half
that we've been doing this and then we are going to go out and tour with Muse in October
and other than that it’s just back in the studio and I'm really excited to make another
record and keep going.
