An Interview with Local Natives
Ryan Hahn They just seem kind of surreal, I mean when we found out about
the shows a few weeks months back its just a way how we ever
thought--
Andy Hamm: I thought it was BS, it sold, like the first one sold out on my dads
BS and they’re like, “Who knows, it’s true.” I’m Andy
Ryan Hahn: I’m Ryan and we play the band Local Natives. We've come to find
I think more than a lot of bands were really collaborative. You
know it’s like almost a very democratic process we kind of draw
ideas around the room, everyone put their say in and you know we
really like the fact that every songs we write, you know every one
everyone is happy because everyone’s put there you know put
there their influence and their title on the songs and yes. Guerilla
Manor was just all of us kind of living together and writing songs
in the living room and kind of realizing how our band works and
how you know what are strength are and yes, its kind of to realize
that we’re a very collaborative band and very like communal
effort.
Andy Hamm It’s a song that’s on process were you know some either have a
mean skeleton for the song and bring it and then we’ll flip it 20
times over a 100 times over or it will literary be somebody that just
have that simple progression or even just a riff and then we’ll all
sort of meet up and work and rework it so like in some point that
everybody is really confident and they do without--
Ryan Hahn This is our first time doing an album you now like for us is just the
way we knew how. It’s the only way we just did it, I mean it will
be interesting to see what came of us in the studio kind of like
behind the boards, likes figuring out this little gadgets and stuff.
It’s like I said, it was just like a really natural experience, you
know just acoustic guitars and around like the piano in the living
room kind of that.
Andy Hamm: It was like a Ryan said, it was just a new band really trying out
different sounds and getting into a point where everybody felt
comfortable with it and it wasn’t until you know after the fact that
we have a lot people on the outside who you know we are first
showing the songs to it and they’re like, “I hear you don’t.” The
drums and the harmonies are a lot and that was something that we
play black like well that is something that we do and you know a
lot of our songs is, you know come of kind straight a lot on the
vocal parts and then we do spend a lot times especially with
Chelsea playing a drum up in front, we try a lot of different
rhythms within the songs.
I think we just came from I don’t know probably that we need to
do we needed art work and were very particular about what we like
and so we would always be looking for things outside of ourselves
and it always came back that were like we just should do of within
band. And sort of this attitude that we carry with and it seems like
any time we try to tackle something and it ends up coming back
where it comes from within the band and yeah I really like that is
like more work and a bit more trying at times but it the end
everybody much more exciting about it.
Ryan Hahn: I mean I help its probably a bit more energetic than the record I
think that just comes actually you know live that we just we play
with the bit more energy and
Andy Hamm It’s louder
Andy Hamm I think it’s a different experience I would help for everybody you
know each line different theirs you know like were playing like a
hole on the wall you know where the ceiling is like just above my
head and theirs like you know 75 people came in there but a lot
waving like it was you know that felt huge or that was awesome
everybody was singing along and then sometimes our source will
play a really big place. It would be like, “Oh, you felt a little dead”
or so it’s really a show by show and the crowd in the room and
every thing coming together. I hope that you walk away you know,
not only enjoying the music by getting a different experience from
the record in a good way you now sort of each other. I really like
going you know I like the record for this reason but I also like the
bands live shows for different reasons.
Ryan Hahn What you cool not like the album is now for really bit like you
know we can have like worst show realize but I can
Andy Hamm Kind of terrible man but then you wake up and some says did you
play like whatever song. Its like fear is on I have such a great time
and had so much fun like to me last. Ask really, really cool to hear
that makes everything to hear.
