Hi! My name is Cherie. I’m going to be your hostess today as we go on in Art Adventure. An adventure that will give you some special time with your kids at home, on a rainy day or a snowy day, or even a weekend when you just don’t know quite what to do with your kids. First we’re going to kind of look at some of the basic things you might want to start to collect at home, so here everybody needs sharpies, markers are great for kids/. If you have young children you may want to use watercolor markers so they don’t stain clothing or stain your walls since sharpies are permanent but for a lot of these projects they actually work better.
You also want to get some paint pens, paint pens are great new invention. They’re a lot easier for children to work with than using a brush and paint because they have better fine motor control when they’re actually doing their drawing but it looks like they actually painted it. Just plain old Elmer’s glue is really good and good old stand by glue sticks are great for gluing different kinds of papers together. And my favorite is the polymer medium. The Acrylic-based medium is great for thinning paints. It’s a glue and it also doubles as a gloss finish on projects that you want to have a shine to them.
Also you may want to make certain that you got some glitter in one of those little boxes that you’re going to have. I can’t think of any aged child that doesn’t love to play with glitter. Also, glitter comes in these little liquid containers now. This is great stuff because kids have a little bit more control with it. All you have to do is cut the little top off and they can actually direct the glue exactly where they want it to decorate a project. Pipe cleaners are something you’re going to want to have on hand ‘cause they’re great for decorating. Masks using for some kind of a trim on a project you’ve made or just using the pipe cleaners themselves to create little creatures and animals.
If you’re in the craft store there are all kinds of really fun things that you can find if you just walk up and down the aisles. There’s this little foam shapes that are really fun for kids to work with especially younger kids because they don’t have to mess with cutting things out. They can just pick out the shapes, the colors and then glue them straight down.
Also, another really fun thing for children are these little googly eyes and you probably all remember these from when you were younger, and a little hot glue, and some googly eyes and they can go a long way to make a project extra fun. Glue gun, great thing to have on hand. Children probably as young as five or six with a lot of supervision can use glue gun as long as you make it clear to them that they need to be careful and keep their fingers out of the hot glue because it really is hot. You’re also going to want scissors, some paint brushes, of course, you need pencils, erasers, you might want to have some tape around, masking tape, great for putting things together in creating armatures that you may papier-mâché overlaid or put fabric on.
Some twine is good, compass, ruler, some acrylic paint, great thing to have around the house. They come in little jars like this. You don’t even have to squeeze them on a palette anymore. It’s a great all purpose paint. The only drawback is that it doesn’t come out here close. So if you’re doing a craft project, make sure your kids have an old shirt on. Smack, it’s a good thing to have.
You got to need paper, variety of different kinds of papers, construction paper, and these days you can go to craft stores and they have some really fun papers. They have metallic papers, they have animal-print papers that are awesome to cut out shapes and glue on to something else, and more crafty items that are fun for kids are the little imitation gemstones that you can glue on to projects, to decorate. You could always get bells. Bells are fun to make noises and once you get started you’re going to find that all these materials, you’re going to find different ways to use these and have fun with them. And hopefully the project ideas that I give you in this DVD will just be kind of a spring board for lots of other ideas that you’re going to come up with on your own.
Model Magic, fun stuff, really fun. We’re going to be doing a project with Model Magic. Model Magic is great stuff. It air dries, it comes in different colors and you can even mix the different colors to make your own colors. Some craft sticks are a good thing to have. Just keep them in a little box or you know a Tupperware container wherever you want to store them, however, you want to store them. They come in colors now. There’s also foam sheets that you can buy that are fun. We’re going to be making puppets with this foam. It comes in different colors. It’s relatively inexpensive. You can buy it in a mix package or you can buy the sheets individually. You might want to buy an inexpensive set of watercolors. Watercolors are great. We’re going to be using these later in the show to paint a background for a little mirror we’re going to create using Model Magic.
The last thing I have here is a collection of beans that I purchased in the grocery store. Now, you probably going to wonder what on earth that you’re going to do with these beans. Well, if you stay tuned you will found out there’s lots of things, lots of projects you can do. They’re a lot of fun for children just using beans that you would buy in the grocery store.
Now, if you look at all these supplies, you’re maybe thinking “Wow, this is a lot of stuff to get!” But you know as you start to build your collection of art supplies you know you could start out with two colors of glitter, you could just buy a few colors, your basic colors or sharpies or paint pens. You don’t have to have every color. The other thing is you can look for sales. Individually, none of these items are particularly expensive but of course when you start buying a lot of them it could add up.
Another fun thing that’s good to do is you can just sort of start saving things. If you save like the cardboard insides from shirts when you’re doing your regular shopping, that’s great for a base for some kind of project that might use beans or glitter. You can save extra ribbons and yarn. Don’t throw anything away. Save bottle tops, save the popped tops of your soda cans, hang on to close pens, empty spools of thread, there are all kinds of things that you can save at home, things that you think that nobody would be interested in. But they’re great decorative items for kids to use when they’re creating some project that they’ve come up with on their own. So have fun with your kids and we are going to get started on some rainy day art projects.
