The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was essentially a tourist guide for travelers of the ancient world, to travel around, to see some of the most famous site seeing destinations of the time.
The earliest known list was created in the 2nd Century BC by Antipater of Sidon. All of these wonders were man made and bordered the Greek world. This was thought to give us sense of awe and mystery to the Greeks at the time.
Many more lists in recent years have been created that included natural wonders of the world and modern wonders of the world. However, none of these lists are formal and none of them are agreed upon by everone.
