An Overview of Biodiesel

Hi! My name is Jason Burroughs with Diesel Green Fuels. We see biodiesel and vegetable of fuels to the Austin, Texas areas. Today, I am going to be talking about how to make your own biodiesel from items you would find in your own kitchen and your local hardware store. We are going to be using vegetable oil as the base, methanol as the alcohol, Lye as the catalyst which is Sodium Hydroxide and we are going to be making a product called biodiesel that can used in any diesel vehicle with no modification. We are also going to talk about safety. It's important to use the appropriate safety material to ensure that your skin doesn't get burned by the Lye and that includes safety goggles, long sleeve shirt, as well as rubber gloves that are resistant to chemicals.

A little bit about myself. About three years ago I started the Austin Biodiesel Cooperative which is a non-profit co up here in Austin after ten years in the computer industry. About two years ago, we created Diesel Green Fuels to supply biodiesel to people in Austin. So today we have give locations around Austin supplying biodiesel and use cooking oil for people who have converted their vehicles to run directly on used cooking oil. We also do conversion so that you can run the car directly on vegetable oil as well. We are also, today, going to be talking about the history of biofuel. So let's get ready to get started and make our first batch of biodiesel.
