John Sundy: Marko, you talk about a problem that can be a difficult for physicians to diagnose. Swelling of the ankles can be caused by a variety things and not necessarily arthritis. Sometimes swelling is a marker of fluid accumulation around the joints, and this could be due to problems with the veins of the legs. It could be also a result of problems with the heart or even the thyroid gland, but arthritis can also involve the ankles and when it does, it usually is an inflammatory kind of arthritis such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis, a form of arthritis that can be associated with the skin condition psoriasis.
