Jaydee: I see these skincare products on the market and I am wondering if they actually work. Besides staying out of the sun, is there anything I can do to slow down the ageing process, or is Mother Nature just going to do her work?
April Armstrong: Jaydee that is an excellent question. There are a lot of skincare products that claim to make your skin look younger. But many of these claims are not supported by clinical data.
It is important to remember that much of the skin ageing process is caused by chronic exposure to the sun. Therefore, wearing a sunscreen when you are outside is always one of the best ways to maintain younger looking skin.
For my patients, I recommend wearing a daily sunscreen with SPF 30 or above, so that they can enjoy those sunny days with a right skin protection.
If you will like to reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles without having a cosmetic procedure, a tropical cream such as tretinoin can help. And finally, for some patients, who prefer to visit a dermatologist office for cosmetic procedures, these days dermatologist have a variety of skin rejuvenation tools, including, Botox, fillers, chemical peels and lasers.
It is important that you discuss with your dermatologist, your particular skincare needs before starting any treatment.
