Apple iPod Touch - Tech Review
Tiffany: Hi there and welcome to Neo-Fight.tv, the technology show for the not so geeky. This is our Halloween Episode. In case you haven’t notice, I’m sitting here with Elvis in his later years and I have to beat him into shape because his a little overweight, cut Elvis.
Ben: Thank you very much.
Tiffany: Elvis we need to focus on your voice second and your physical fitness first.
Ben: This is all men.
Tiffany: Is this what they do? I'm going to handcuffs this to the refrigerator right. You do not get in without permission.
Ben: Not so much Elvis, sounds a little more John Wayne that’s not good.
Tiffany: Yeah, so what do you do for Halloween? You know if you have an opportunity, send us some pictures. I think this some of the most creative. If you got a good costumes send it over. We’d like to see maybe have some ideas for next year. Otherwise see Ben’s very creative.
Ben: And today’s show, we’re going to be looking it. Now remember a few weeks ago, we looked at some of the new iPod, the iPod Nano and iPod classic and at the time, the third iPod had not come out yet. The iPod touch and I have here in front of me, the iPod touch that I’m going to take some video up here.
Tiffany: So, the iPod touch is not Bluetooth right?
Ben: No Bluetooth, no speaker, no microphone.
Tiffany: And you cannot get Wi-Fi unless you’re in a hot spot.
Ben: Well, you I can get Wi-Fi when I got home.
Tiffany: One if you have to be—you have to be within range, having network security code and all that stuff.
Ben: Right, so here is the iPod touch and it’s basically an iPhone without the phone but it also does not have Bluetooth as well like you were saying and it does not come with some of the applications that the iPhone has. No mail, no Google maps, no stock charts, no weather all of this cool applications.
Tiffany: That cost you what three grand a year to be with AT&T?
Ben: Okay. The AT&T aside that’s right, so the other nice thing is actually quite a bit thinner. I mean it’s quite thinner with an iPhone.
Tiffany: I didn’t notice that yet.
Ben: Here is take a look at this here. And if you take a look edge on, it is quite a bit thinner than the iPhone. Now, there’s something kind a different though that I’ve done here. I’ve use this thing called jailbreak which this hacking application that you can use to open up the phone.
Tiffany: Is that legal because I can arrest you for that.
Ben: It’s over the phone and I actually—what I’ve done is actually put all those iPhone applications back on this phone. So, if open it up here—
Tiffany: Now that’s legal?
Ben: Well, its legal but I think it’s not supported, so take a look at this.
Tiffany: I’m going to check my manual.
Ben: Look I put a little nice background on it and you’ll notice here that I’ve got mail like you know the one here, so if I click on this I can go in there and get my mailed just like you would.
Tiffany: Jail break.
Ben: It’s called jail break, that’s what it called. And it also has iPod functionality about the calendar in there. Here’s a cute little program called sketches that I put on here. I don’t know if you can see this. This turns into kind of like an etch sketch where I can take my finger and actually—see that.
Tiffany: Uh-huh.
Ben: Makes you draw around like that.
Tiffany: Okay.
Ben: So you can actually draw just—there’s all kinds of games you can get on here, they’re working on a Nintendo emulator so you can play Nintendo games on here.
Tiffany: Cool.
Ben: So lots of fun stuff plus I put maps on here. I put stocks back on here again. So you can add all this applications from the iPhone back to your iPod touch.
Tiffany: And how many Gigs do these come in?
Ben: So these one is eight and it also comes in a 16 as well and this has a lot more iPod functionality for instance with an iPhone you have to sync play list. You can't just drag songs to it. You can’t drag videos if to set up a play list and then anything you want, you put on a play list and then you hit the sync button and it will sync it over. This has drag and drop on it. So with this, you can go into your music library.
Tiffany: Just like Halloween party doesn’t it?
Ben: Enjoying your music library—it was my microphone.
Tiffany: I got it.
Ben: Thank you very much and we’ll just take this here. You go to your iTunes library and you’re just going to drag the music across. So, I think functionality speaking this is actually got a lot more iPod functionality than the iPod.
Tiffany: You know, you’ve got hair’s hanging down that are so destructing and it looks like this hair that are just like hanging down here.
Ben: And it’s a cheap costume. What do you think?
Tiffany: Just like nose hairs because it just let you out into your nose.
Ben: Hold this to tell me what you think size wise, do you think a good iPod for you?
Tiffany: It will make a good iPod. I saw the issue with the service provider being stop with one and issue—
Ben: No service provider?
Tiffany: But I mean, oh yeah. Now well—
Ben: This is not an iPhone.
Tiffany: Well, except for the fact that I would need a service provider because I would want the accessibility being able to get Wi-Fi anywhere.
Ben: Right. Well and you can't get that Wi-Fi—
Tiffany: If they had one more—yeah I know that they have one more application that are added, you could access almost like a sprint card worth 50 bucks a month. You just have it on your—
Ben: That’s called an iPhone, 50 bucks a month or 60 bucks a month for iPhone.
Tiffany: That’s for like for two minutes a month.
Ben: Lots unlimited data there. It is unlimited data. Now there’s no way to get phone any phone functionality on here. There’s no microphone, there’s no speaker.
Tiffany: Then you have to buy that cable, special cable for video. So some other things that—I’m sticking with what I’ve got for now.
Ben: And you have the Nano?
Tiffany: I have both the Nano and then I got the 80G you know previous version.
Ben: Try with the hard drive?
Tiffany: With the hard drive because I just get a lot more stuff on it. It works on all of my—I already have bought five cables for my house. I have a little inset next to the TV so I can take—put them wherever I want and not yet for me. I like what they came up with. I like that you did jail break although that was very naughty probably.
Ben: I’m a naughty boy.
Tiffany: That’s cool, cool what you did.
Ben: I work with some nasty comments on my Elvis accent. I can see that all ready but I like it and I got to tell you, when I first got it and it didn’t have those applications, I was pretty ho hum, but now that it’s got these applications on it that again and let me iterate or don’t think I said it yet. So let me iterate since I’m not reiterate.
That putting these applications I think it voids your warranty. I mea this is not from Apple right, this is a third party hack that allows you to put this applications on—you like those handcuffs?
Tiffany: Well, I’m just trying to unlock them now.
Ben: So you put all the stuff on it and you’ll be able to put games on here and all kinds of other stuff. I think I really had some of the functionality of what is a fairly expensive 299.
Tiffany: But it’s not fair. Does it really void the warranty, you’re not sure.
Ben: I think it voids the warranty. I think if you take this back to—did you take this to an iPhone store and there something wrong with it, they’re going to say I’m sorry you put some—
Tiffany: But you can't just reset the factory default?
Ben: You can do that, yes.
Tiffany: Yeah, so they would never really know. I mean there still like sort of neo trio.
Ben: Unless it was broken to the point. Now let say the battery run out or something was broken with the phone where you couldn’t turn it off. So you couldn’t reset it factory defaults and then you take into their and they try to fix it for you and they decided you’ve done this.
Tiffany: They realized that you have done some—violations in there agreement to purchase everything from them.
Ben: So the iPod Touch, I got to tell you I gave this like or let me just play some video on it so people can see.
Tiffany: The video is great.
Ben: The video is beautiful.
Tiffany: Yeah.
Ben: I’m going to play; here I got a sign felt episode I think on here, lets full its back. So here is—it will sign now. You’ll notice I like the iPhone it has speaker on it. The iPhone you can here the music or the videos through the speaker. This has no speaker so you definitely do need to have a headphone or something.
Tiffany: Or just like the regular iPod.
Ben: Just like the regular iPhone. There is Jerry Seinfield naked.
Tiffany: Nice.
Ben: So beautiful screen, same thing with—if I go back here to the like photos section here. Where is photos?
Tiffany: There is no question as a very pretty iPod.
Ben: Yeah. Once you got the same sort of thing where you rotate the screen and then you can go through the photos just like you can on your iPhone.
Tiffany: Right.
Ben: So very, very similar functionality. In fact, if you’re someone who likes the iPhone but you totally attach to your phone service because it’s on sprint.
Tiffany: Service, yeah.
Ben: Then this is maybe a good option for you.
Tiffany: Well, if this had—the only thing I think that this is really missing is the fact that you can't connect via Wi-Fi. Of course then you’re using via phone but you know—
Ben: And you can't connect to home. If you got Wi-Fi at home you can connect at home and you know—
Tiffany: But then you have to go in there and load the application set more, it supposed to be on here in the first place.
Ben: No Wi-Fi comes with it.
Tiffany: But only to check your mail and get your mail and do you know all that.
Ben: You do have to get those--
Tiffany: Since sort, it have to—you know?
Ben: So I gave it like a three out of five the way I came but I give it a five out of five once you put all those extra applications on it so I’m kind of half and half. And maybe I should be like in the middle of four or five or something.
Tiffany: Well, I’m at the two out of five and now that’s going to be really low but I just don’t think that it’s fair that you have to get different cables. I mean its not like you’re doing high definition and then it makes me feel frustrated. With Apple because, they are then you know trying to get you on a back end again when—Oh my gosh I have win all not spend a $1,000.00 on iPods you know.
Ben: The cable issue really bothers me as well and that’s the same with all the new iPod.
Tiffany: And then you stock the service provider in the iPhone so if it wasn’t for those issues and I could just put this right back in I would probably want to bought this already and it’s just something simple.
Ben: Well that’s two out of five for Tiffany and five out five for me Hack. Five out of five Hack for me. So that’s seven out 10 for the Apple iPod Touch which I think is a great form factor with this at other applications. Without this other applications on it, I think I’d rather just stick with the Nano.
Tiffany: Yeah
Ben: But with the mail and other stuff on it that is enough to just --
Tiffany: And then you have both. You have the iPhone and you have—
Ben: I got them as well of course it’s for reviewing in such like that.
Tiffany: That’s right. You got have one thing.
Ben: And check out this side bar. So you know actually this side bar would be a great iPod Nano case if its somehow figure out a way you’re just like adhere it here. Stick it right there, that will be great case for I can just hide it them my side bars.
Tiffany: I can't imagine that you won’t go out and how are we without something high tech like you have a Google map already of what the best houses to hit for Halloween to get the best candy.
Ben: And we have another segment coming right next after this, so please hang around and stay tuned.
Tiffany: We’ll be right back.
Ben: And welcome back to Neo-Fight.tv and I have no idea what I’m doing. Sorry, I apologize.
Tiffany: We need to get nurse Ratchet in here got off medication Elvis.
Ben: In the second spotlight today we are taking to look at this. This is from a company called Newer Technology this is the Mini Stock Version 3 and it’s an external hard drive and ports Hub for a computer. Now, it’s designed to go with the Mac mini. For instance, here I had a Mac mini is designed you’ll notice it fits.
Tiffany: That’s cool.
Ben: But even though it was designed for that, you I don’t use a Mac mini. I have a laptop, you have a laptop? It works great with any laptop or even any desktop computer but I think it’s very well designed to go with laptop.
Tiffany: Oh, I do too. Well, the fact that it’s small I meant it’s a small footprint.
Ben: It’s small, it has small footprints.
Tiffany: You can probably turn on side you want to?
Ben: That’s right.
Tiffany: So you got less—
Ben: Send it up that later— now what’s cool about this and this is something that most external drives don’t have. This has USB FireWire 800 and this new kind of eSATA which is serial drive connector on here and you can connect using any of these to your computer and it will automatically use the fastest port to connect to the hard drive.
Tiffany: Very nice.
Ben: So if you connect by USB, you’ll get USB speeds. If you connect by the FireWire you’ll get FireWire speeds. If you connect the eSATA connection you’ll get those speeds. Very, very smart for connecting and if you use the eSATA if you’ve got one of those on you laptop then you’re going to get really fast speeds.
Tiffany: Tell me where these ports went or with that one does.
Ben: Yeah. Well actually and I don’t know if the new Mac minis, the old Mac minis don’t have eSATA things on there so even though it supposed to go with the Mac mini it doesn’t have the right port for it but some of the new laptops and new desktops like a Mac Pro and some of the other ones have that eSATA. You plug that in
Tiffany: I have to look at my iMac and see. I buy that too long ago.
Ben: And you’re going to get of the iMac probably has the FireWire800 which is also very, very smart and it doesn’t have a lot of other stuff you can hook it up too. So you know it’s a good thing to hook that up and you’ll get—if you hook it p to USB you then have a USB hub here. You can use all the USB’s and if you hook it up to your FireWire, you can use the other FireWire port.
Tiffany: Can you imagine that be great for video editing?
Ben: This is great because of the speed.
Tiffany: The speed right.
Ben: This one really fantastic for video editing.
Tiffany: I like it.
Ben: Yeah, it’s a 500GB for 239 now that’s a bit more expensive then you can go out and buy just an external hard drives.
Tiffany: Yeah, but it has the extra functionality. It’s coming out with. It’s got the new technology.
Ben: It’s got the—
Tiffany: What’s the name?
Ben: Newer technology.
Tiffany: We get it, we get it.
Ben: So really fits well and I hook this up via the FireWire 800 and that also is to use the other FireWire ports so it’s a bit weird. FireWire and USB are still kind of separate. If you hook up the FireWire port to your computer, you can then use this FireWire port and so the FireWire port.
Tiffany: So could you like basically since it has a hub.
Ben: Yeah but only for FireWire and not for USB. But if you then hook the USB port you could then use to as 1 2 and 3 USB port for hub. So if you plug two wires in your computer FireWire and USB you can use all those ports.
Tiffany: I don’t know about you but my hard drives looks like octopuses. There’s just wires’ coming. I just plug everything and figure out what works.
Ben: It’s got internal crucial fan thing in here and the other cool thing I like about is it has the—and most external drives don’t have this. It has the Kensington locking port so you buy one of those locking cables you can like tie on your leg—
Tiffany: Tie on your leg?
Ben: Tie on your desk leg and lock it down here which is great for if ever you’re doing something mobile like you’re going to a clients office or something and you take it some video editing, will do a lot of video editing.
So, if you’re going to clients place and you got all your video one here, you can lock it down to the desk along with your laptop. You know lock your laptop to desk and this—if you need security—
Tiffany: Just in case. It’s very hard to take it serious like costume.
Ben: When you were at there kind of weird here. With new technology—
Tiffany: It reminds me of something else.
Ben: When new technology sends us this product they probably did not realize that they would be being reviewed on Halloween episode and therefore would have—
Tiffany: Right. But you know we got through without mail cracking up and the erupting it took a lot of work on my part to be a good listener because this is just—you just see yourself.
Ben: I can’t see myself. So I got to tell you, it’s a very cool device. I would love it if they can come up the way where you can plug one cable in and they get to USB and FireWire. You don’t have to plug two cables in at the same time that bothers me.
Tiffany: We can use my handcuffs to lock this up.
Ben: I’m not going there.
Tiffany: Maybe not this one specifically because it’s a little plastic key but you know let me go a handcuffs for this.
Ben: Sure.
Tiffany: Lock them up, keep it safe.
Ben: Yeah.
Tiffany: So, newer technologies good job, I like it.
Ben: To keep my head inside the frame here for this absolutely, I don’t know as I keep going outside.
Tiffany: You have a big head anyway so I mean out here and everything else so definitely right at the top. But look how nicely my head fills out now except that I got a small head like a pinhead. See if that was the bigger hair sometimes because I’m a little petite so.
Ben: So, my only complain would be could newer come out or could someone come out with the way that use one cable to hook it up and then I get to USB and FireWire, I mean with one cable and I think it over.
Tiffany: Yeah because like I said mind is an octopus. I got cords everywhere on my desk with my—but I would buy this. So I think this is a—I’m going to give four out of five actually yeah four out of five is a little bit higher price than the others but I agree Ben if we can get a way to get the technology with the one cable that be.
Ben: And I’m going with the four out of five as well. Again, I love it and if you got a Mac mini on it just great how well just stocks up.
Tiffany: Nobody in your technologies will be arrested today.
Ben: That’s right. But I also agree, it’s a little pricy and it also—I really it was a way of just hooking it up with one cable. That would be I think–
Tiffany: Very cool.
Ben: But other that I give four out of five.
Tiffany: Designed is good, footprints are great, small. And it works. The big key is that it works folks.
Ben: So that’s four out of five for Tiffany, four out five for me, eight out of ten.
Tiffany: He’s distracting himself because it won’t cost him.
Ben: Fried chicken, I’ll be right back.
Tiffany: I think it’s the police uniform.
Ben: That’s pretty distracting too I have to tell.
Tiffany: I do that you rated. So this is the Neo-Fight party outfit.
Ben: That’s right.
Tiffany: And tone it down.
Ben: Yeah. It’s only half as much of that up to there when she goes out.
Tiffany: Trick or treating your right. Keep the door sling to my face. I don’t think all the mommies would like that.
Ben: Four out of five for Tiffany, four out of five for me that’s eight out of ten for the newer technology mini stock, a term that could not be applied to Tiffany.
Tiffany: She can move that on your own Ben. I said I did the tone now in version. I didn’t do the pop out.
Ben: That’s only we have for this week. If you have a second visit our website. Send us a comment www.neo-fight.TV and we will see you next week where it will be much more appropriately dressed.
Tiffany: Thank you for watching and Happy, Happy Halloween.
Ben: And if you have an extra 30 seconds take a look at this.
